Volatile Week in Crypto Sees Altcoin Surge and Plunge, PEPE Gains Amidst Market Downturn
The cryptocurrency market experienced significant turbulence over the past week, marked by an altcoin’s brief ascent to a record high before a sharp decline. The frog-themed meme coin PEPE also captured attention, posting robust gains despite a broader market slump, though the focus eventually shifted to Binance.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange faced a $6.3 billion hack, which has tarnished the digital asset sector’s reputation and sent ripples of concern through the community. This incident followed an announcement from the company detailing its intention to delist numerous trading pairs.
Earlier this week, Quack AI (Q) experienced a sudden surge, reaching a new all-time high of $0.24. Its market capitalization climbed to nearly $1 billion, positioning it among the top 100 cryptocurrencies. However, the token rapidly shed its gains, falling back to approximately $0.06, nearly returning to its pre-rally valuation.
While the catalyst for this classic “pump-and-dump” maneuver remains unclear, some astute traders appeared to capitalize on the price action, fueling speculation of insider knowledge. Trader 0xF1fE reportedly profited close to $1 million, primarily by establishing long positions on Q as its price ascended. Meanwhile, Crypto with Haris ₿ stated he earned over $17,000 after identifying what he described as the “perfect top” to short Q.
The AI-focused altcoin has continued to exhibit high volatility in the subsequent days, currently trading around $0.04. This represents a 15% increase on a daily basis but a 60% decrease over the past week.
PEPE’s Resilience Amidst Market Sell-Off
The popular meme coin has seen a 6% increase over the last week, currently valued at approximately $0.0000052. With a market capitalization of around $2.2 billion, it ranks as the 46th-largest cryptocurrency.
A primary driver of PEPE’s strong performance is a recent move by TRON founder Justin Sun. Reports emerged earlier this week indicating that the Chinese businessman had increased his PEPE holdings to 11.85 trillion coins, making him the token’s largest individual holder. In fact, only Binance, Robinhood, and Coinbase hold more PEPE than Sun.
Analysts, including Altcoin Sherpa and Sweep, have suggested that the meme coin’s upward trend may not yet be over. Furthermore, the X account BSCN recently disclosed that a prominent “whale” investor had acquired over 45 billion PEPE for approximately $206,000.
Binance Hack Dominates Headlines
Undoubtedly, the most significant news of the week, and potentially the year so far, is the $6.3 billion hack suffered by Binance. Some observers suspect the perpetrators may be the North Korea-linked group TraderTraitor, which was also implicated in last year’s $1.5 billion attack on Bybit.
The hack has had a negative impact on the crypto sector, triggering approximately $1.5 billion in liquidations, predominantly affecting long positions. In the wake of the incident, the total market capitalization of the industry saw a 3.6% decline over the past 24 hours, settling around $2.68 trillion.
This represents a notable drop, yet some might have anticipated a more severe fallout, given Binance’s prominent status in the crypto world and its leading position in the market. According to X user Quinten, the market’s relative stability post-hack can be attributed to the absence of a “domino effect.”
“Unlike FTX and other collapses, this won’t trigger a chain reaction of bankruptcies, liquidations and further losses across the industry,” Quinten explained. “Money was stolen from the world’s biggest exchange. Binance has the funds to cover it. Nobody else takes the hit. Why would the market crash over an isolated incident involving the player with the deepest pockets in the industry? No contagion. No bankruptcy risk. No domino effect.”
Binance’s Operational Updates
Beyond the multi-billion dollar attack, Binance conducted wallet maintenance on the ETH network on October 28, temporarily suspending deposits and withdrawals for that blockchain. Operations were expected to have resumed without issue.
The company also announced its intention to delist several spot trading pairs, including AAVE/BTC, ATOM/BTC, CAKE/BTC, DASH/BTC, ETC/BTC, ICP/BTC, PENDLE/BTC, RENDER/BTC, TAO/BTC, THETA/BTC, XAUT/BTC, and XTZ/BTC. Additionally, the following margin trading pairs were slated for delisting on October 30: RE/USD1, 币安人生/U, KAT/U, BTC/USDS, ETH/USDS, AVNT/U, FET/U, TRUMP/U, APT/U, and WLFI/U.
