Binance Suffers Record-Breaking $5.8 Billion Crypto Hack
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has confirmed it was the victim of a massive hack, with digital assets valued between $2 billion and $5.8 billion siphoned from its systems. The incident marks the largest single hack in the history of the cryptocurrency industry.
Attack Details and Suspected Perpetrators
According to a forensic analysis by security firm Blockaid, the attackers targeted two of Binance’s hot wallets, identified as “Binance 14” and “Binance 16.” The stolen assets include significant amounts of various cryptocurrencies, such as $1.6 billion in USDT, $62.6 million in RLUSD, $450 million in Ethereum (ETH), $800 million in USDC, 6.19 million Uniswap (UNI), and 2.26 million Chainlink (LINK).
The stolen funds were subsequently transferred to a newly created address that had recently received funding through the privacy mixer Tornado Cash. Security experts noted that the methodology of the attack bears a striking resemblance to a recent exploit targeting Bitget, leading to speculation that North Korean state-sponsored actors may be responsible.
Industry Response and Fund Freezes
In a swift and coordinated effort, stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle have frozen a combined $2.3 billion of the stolen assets, a move widely praised as crucial for mitigating the damage. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed that his company froze over $1.56 billion in USDT, while Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire announced the freeze of more than $800 million in USDC.
DeFi lending platform Aave also took precautionary measures, freezing its lending markets to prevent the attacker from leveraging the stolen funds to acquire other assets.
Binance Assures Users of Fund Security
Binance co-founder and major shareholder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has assured the crypto community that all user funds remain secure. He expressed significant gratitude for the rapid actions taken by Tether and Circle, which have been instrumental in preventing a larger loss. Binance’s security teams are actively investigating the incident and are expected to provide further updates through official channels.
Market Impact and Historical Context
The $5.8 billion loss surpasses the previous record held by Bybit, which suffered a $1.5 billion hack. However, the substantial amount of frozen funds means the net loss for the attackers is considerably lower, estimated at around $3.5 billion.
The hack has had a noticeable impact on the broader cryptocurrency market. At the time of reporting, approximately 3.13% of the total crypto market capitalization had been erased, bringing the remaining market cap down to $2.63 trillion. Bitcoin (BTC) saw a decline of 2.92%, falling below the $81,000 mark to trade at $78,852. Ethereum (ETH) experienced a steeper drop of 3.64%, trading at $2,272. Other affected assets also saw downward price movements.
