Binance Seeks Brazilian License Amid Service Restrictions
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has applied for a cryptocurrency service provider license in Brazil, aiming to continue its operations in one of Latin America’s most significant crypto markets. The move comes ahead of a regulatory deadline on Friday, October 30.
The exchange submitted its application to the Central Bank of Brazil on Friday, October 23, through its local entity, BBrasil. According to a statement shared with Cointelegraph, the company believes this filing will enable Brazilian users to maintain access to crypto assets, stablecoin trading, payments, and investment services.
However, Binance has also announced changes for its Brazilian users, effective Tuesday. These include restrictions on crypto lending, margin trading, and other services. The exchange will also delist 22 crypto assets within the country.
Thiago Sarandy, Binance’s general manager in Brazil, expressed support for a regulated market that acknowledges the unique characteristics of virtual assets, fostering continued advancement in technology and innovation. “We hope that the ongoing dialogue with the Central Bank will allow us to offer, in the near future, other products that were discontinued to comply with current regulations,” Sarandy stated.
Brazil’s regulatory framework requires existing crypto service providers to submit authorization applications by October 30 to continue operating under transitional arrangements. It is important to note that filing an application does not guarantee regulatory approval.
