Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs See Divergent Outflow Trends

New York, NY – U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced net outflows totaling $442.62 million during the week of October 19-23, 2026, a period marked by heightened market volatility. Concurrently, spot Ethereum ETFs saw outflows of $224.96 million over the same timeframe.

The most significant outflow for Bitcoin ETFs occurred on October 22, with a single-day exit of approximately $635.5 million, the largest recorded since June 2026. This substantial outflow largely negated the gains these funds had accumulated earlier in the week.

In contrast, the $224.96 million in outflows from Ethereum ETFs was not an isolated event. It represented an extension of a multi-week trend of weekly outflows, suggesting a more persistent investor sentiment shift.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) emerged as a focal point, leading its category in both inflows and outflows during the reporting period. Fidelity was another prominent issuer experiencing fluctuating investor participation. Since its launch, IBIT has attracted an estimated $65 billion to $66 billion in net inflows.

On the other end of the spectrum, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) has seen cumulative outflows of around $28 billion.

The total assets under management for spot Bitcoin ETFs reached approximately $104 billion to $105 billion, while Ethereum ETFs held around $14.5 billion. Despite the recent outflows, cumulative net inflows into Bitcoin ETFs since their inception remain robust, exceeding $57 billion. The weekly outflow of $442.62 million therefore represents less than 1% of the total assets in the Bitcoin ETF category.

The divergence in investor conviction between Bitcoin and Ether ETFs is becoming increasingly apparent. While Bitcoin funds weathered a significant single-day outflow, they maintain a substantial cushion of cumulative inflows. Ethereum funds, however, are grappling with a more sustained trend of withdrawals. The extended period of weekly outflows suggests that some Ether ETF holders are re-evaluating their positions rather than reacting to a single volatile trading session.

The disparity in asset size between the two ETF categories also plays a role. With Ethereum ETFs holding approximately $14.5 billion, a weekly outflow of $224.96 million represents a proportionally larger impact than Bitcoin’s larger outflow from its roughly $104 billion to $105 billion asset base.

The significant influence of IBIT means its flow dynamics can heavily sway the performance of the entire Bitcoin ETF category. When the largest fund experiences both substantial inflows and outflows, the headline weekly figures may offer more insight into BlackRock’s client activity than the broader market sentiment.

The October 22 outflow, being the largest single-day exit since June 2026, is an event that will be further clarified by daily flow reports in the coming weeks.

The long-term outlook for Bitcoin ETFs remains positive, with over $57 billion in cumulative net inflows indicating that the institutional rationale for holding Bitcoin through regulated vehicles remains intact, even as some investors adjust their holdings.
