Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline of nearly $2,000 in approximately 20 minutes on October 6, 2026, wiping out roughly $400 million in leveraged long positions. The cryptocurrency slid more than 5% intraday, plummeting from around $71,765 to $67,895, its lowest point since April.
Liquidations Surge as Bitcoin Tumbles
Data from Coinglass revealed that approximately $394 million in positions were liquidated within a single hour. The vast majority, around $384 million, stemmed from long positions, indicating traders who had bet on prices increasing. Bitcoin traders bore the brunt of the losses, with about $209 million liquidated. Ethereum followed, with roughly $87 million liquidated, while Solana saw approximately $27 million and XRP about $11 million.
Over a 24-hour period, total liquidations across the market surged to approximately $1.02 billion, predominantly driven by long positions.
The Mechanics of Crypto Liquidations
In the realm of crypto derivatives, a liquidation occurs when a leveraged trader’s collateral is insufficient to cover their mounting losses. Exchanges automatically close these positions by selling them into the market. This forced selling pressure can drive prices lower, triggering further liquidations and a cascading effect.
Technical Breakdown and Macroeconomic Headwinds
The selloff was initiated by a technical breakdown, as Bitcoin fell below key on-chain support levels—price zones where buyers had previously intervened to stabilize the market.
Adding to the bearish sentiment, Strategy, the company formerly known as MicroStrategy and the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, sold 32 BTC, valued at approximately $2.5 million, to help fund dividend payments.
Broader macroeconomic pressures also played a role. Factors contributing to the downturn included capital rotation towards AI-focused equities, robust labor market data, rising energy prices, and diminishing expectations for near-term interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve.
Leveraged Bets Amplify Volatility
This event mirrors a familiar pattern for crypto traders. Leveraged positions in perpetual futures, contracts allowing traders to speculate on price movements without an expiry date, can significantly magnify losses during even ordinary spot market declines.
The drop to $67,895 also holds technical significance, marking a return to levels last seen in April. This suggests the market has relinquished a substantial portion of its gains from the preceding months.
The liquidation of $384 million from long positions within an hour signals that optimism had become widespread and potentially fragile.
Implications for Traders and Investors
For spot holders who do not employ leverage, such events, while painful, are generally survivable. However, for leveraged traders, meticulous position sizing and adequate margin buffers are crucial for weathering market dips rather than being wiped out.
Strategy’s dividend-related sale warrants attention. The key question is whether the company’s need to fund dividends will become a recurring source of small sales, and how the market will interpret this signal from Bitcoin’s most prominent corporate advocate.
Following such a significant liquidation event, a substantial amount of overextended leverage has been purged. Traders will now be closely observing whether Bitcoin can reclaim the support levels it lost, or if these former floors will now act as resistance.
