Bitcoin Price Plummets $2,000 in 20 Minutes Amidst Market Volatility

Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline of approximately $2,000 in just 20 minutes early this morning, falling from a stable position above $85,600 to below $84,000. The cryptocurrency had earlier been halted at the $87,000 mark at the start of the business week.

Surge in Liquidations Follows Price Drop

The sudden and significant price movement triggered a substantial spike in liquidations across the market. The total value of liquidated positions reportedly soared to over $550 million on a daily basis, with $430 million of that occurring in the preceding four hours alone. The majority of these liquidations were attributed to long positions.

Altcoins Suffer Heavier Losses

Ethereum (ETH) also saw its price tumble by roughly 4%, dropping below $2,600, with ETH longs bearing the brunt of the liquidations. Other cryptocurrencies, including XRP, HYPE, DOGE, and ADA, experienced even more severe downturns, with losses reaching up to 6% over a 24-hour period.

Over 100,000 Traders Liquidated

In the past day, more than 100,000 traders have seen their positions wiped out. The largest single liquidation order was recorded on Binance, valued at $26 million and involving the ETH/USDC pair, according to data from CoinGlass.

Potential Triggers for the Downturn

Several factors are being cited as potential causes for the significant market leg down. One possibility involves the U.S. government transferring a portion of its cryptocurrency holdings. Lookonchain reported that 834 BTC, valued at $71.56 million, was moved to Coinbase Prime, alongside a transfer of 40,285 BNB. While such movements can impact the market, it’s important to note that this does not necessarily signify a breach of any promises regarding the sale of Bitcoin.

Another potential catalyst for the price slump may be linked to insider trading activity. Lookonchain also highlighted that four newly created wallets deposited $1 million in USDC into Hyperliquid shortly before the crash. These wallets then reportedly opened 40x short positions on nearly 150 BTC, equivalent to $12.5 million.
