Bitcoin Rallies Amid Market Gains, FOMC Hike Fears Linger

Bitcoin Recovers Towards $81,000 Amidst Fed Policy Uncertainty and Tech Rally

Bitcoin is showing signs of recovery, inching closer to the $81,000 mark with a nearly 2% gain as buyers re-enter the market ahead of the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) policy decision. This rebound follows a challenging period for the cryptocurrency, which recently dipped below $80,000, pressured by concerns over interest rate uncertainty impacting crypto markets.

Wall Street provided some positive sentiment, with the Nasdaq Composite climbing 1.18% and the S&P 500 gaining 0.60% by the close of trading last night. South Korea’s KOSPI index then surged 6.63% today, reclaiming the 6,000-point level as optimism surrounding semiconductors boosted Asian equities.

Monetary Policy Test Looms

However, the global market rebound faces a critical test from monetary policy. Bullish sentiment largely anticipates the FOMC holding interest rates steady. Nevertheless, persistent inflation and rising Treasury yields keep the possibility of another rate hike on the table. Bitcoin’s future trajectory may depend as much on the Fed’s forward guidance as on its immediate policy announcement.

The latest recovery in Bitcoin’s price coincides with a resurgence in technology shares across major global markets. The Nasdaq closed Tuesday at 26,477.81, while the S&P 500 finished at 7,722.60. Both indexes extended their gains as investors gravitated towards technology stocks, particularly those involved in artificial intelligence.

South Korean Market Surges on Record Earnings

South Korea’s stock market experienced a more pronounced upward movement. The KOSPI jumped 6.63% to close at 6,012.44, bolstered by record quarterly earnings from SK Hynix and its shareholder return initiatives. The rally also signaled renewed confidence in demand for AI-related semiconductors.

This backdrop could prove beneficial for Bitcoin if investors continue to increase their exposure to risk assets. However, Bitcoin has yet to break decisively above the $82,000 level, a key threshold for rebuilding bullish momentum.

FOMC Decision: The Primary Catalyst

The FOMC decision remains the principal driver for Bitcoin’s price action, despite traders overwhelmingly favoring an unchanged interest rate. Polymarket data indicates a 95% probability of a rate hold, with only about a 4% chance of a 25-basis-point hike.

CME’s FedWatch tool also points towards a hold, with fed funds futures implying a 91% probability. This leaves a smaller, yet significant, possibility of a rate increase.

Inflationary Pressures and Forward Guidance

A more significant concern revolves around what Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh might signal regarding future policy in December. Inflation accelerated to an annual rate of 3.7% in September, and rising energy costs, partly linked to geopolitical events, have further complicated the inflation outlook.

A “hawkish hold” – where rates are held steady but with signals of potential future increases – could still put pressure on Bitcoin. If the Fed indicates that rates may remain elevated or rise again, Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar could strengthen. Such a scenario would diminish the attractiveness of speculative assets, potentially curtailing the current rebound.

Conversely, a less aggressive tone from the Fed could support Bitcoin even without an immediate rate cut. Traders might interpret a hold accompanied by softer forward guidance as an opportunity to increase their allocation to risk assets.

Key Levels to Watch for Bitcoin

The immediate challenge for Bitcoin is to transform its bounce above $80,000 into a sustained recovery. The $82,000 area represents a crucial level to monitor, serving as a threshold for renewed bullish momentum.

A sustained break above $82,000 could improve the short-term outlook and pave the way for a potential advance towards $84,000. However, another rejection near this resistance level could leave Bitcoin vulnerable to a retest of the $80,000 support.

The FOMC decision is likely to trigger short-term volatility in Bitcoin. However, its impact on the mid-term trend is often less predictable. Markets typically price in expected rate decisions well in advance of the announcement, leading to more significant reactions to unexpected policy shifts or changes in forward guidance.

If the Federal Reserve holds rates steady as anticipated, Bitcoin might experience sharp intraday swings without establishing a sustained directional trend.

Historical price action also suggests that Bitcoin does not consistently follow a predictable pattern in the aftermath of FOMC decisions. The cryptocurrency has seen declines after some rate holds before recovering, while other meetings were followed by gains despite unchanged or tighter monetary policy.
