Bitcoin Poised for Long-Term Gains Amidst Economic Uncertainty, Says Bitwise CIO
Bitcoin could emerge from current economic developments in a stronger position, driven by the intertwined forces of artificial intelligence, monetary policy, and increasing institutional adoption, according to Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise.
In his latest weekly CIO memo released Wednesday, Hougan posited that Bitcoin stands to benefit from a variety of economic trajectories. These include an AI-fueled productivity surge, a recession stemming from an AI market downturn, or a period of steady economic expansion.
“As I see it, every path ultimately ends with bitcoin higher,” Hougan stated in the memo.
The commentary arrives as Bitcoin experienced renewed selling pressure on Wednesday, following the release of a U.S. inflation report that exceeded expectations.
The Consumer Price Index for September rose 3.7% year-over-year, surpassing the anticipated 3.6%. Core inflation, meanwhile, increased by 0.3% month-over-month, exceeding forecasts of 0.2%. These figures have bolstered expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Traders have increased the probability of a 25 basis point increase at the October 28 meeting to 41.5%, up from approximately 22% on Tuesday.
Following the inflation data, Bitcoin dipped below $82,000, reaching a low of $81,500. The cryptocurrency has largely traded within the $81,500 to $82,000 range throughout Wednesday, changing hands near $81,700 at the time of reporting.
Three Scenarios for Bitcoin’s Growth
Hougan outlined three distinct economic scenarios that he believes could underpin Bitcoin’s long-term growth:
- AI-Driven Productivity Boom: An acceleration in economic growth driven by AI advancements could lead to lower costs for goods and services. This scenario would enhance the relative value of scarce assets, including gold, real estate, and Bitcoin.
- AI Bubble Collapse and Recession: A potential collapse of an AI market bubble could trigger a recession, initially causing Bitcoin to decline alongside other risk assets. However, Hougan anticipates that governments and central banks would respond with measures such as rate cuts, monetary expansion, and financial support, which could ultimately fuel a Bitcoin recovery.
- Moderate Economic Growth: A period of moderate economic growth would allow Bitcoin to capitalize on sustained inflows from exchange-traded funds (ETFs), continued institutional adoption, and allocations from corporate and sovereign treasuries. The increasing levels of government debt could further bolster demand for Bitcoin as a store of value.
Federal Reserve Policy and Bitcoin
Hougan also suggested that various decisions by the Federal Reserve could ultimately benefit Bitcoin. Aggressive interest rate hikes, he argued, could precipitate a recession, compelling policymakers to implement monetary stimulus. Conversely, maintaining current interest rates amidst persistent inflation could drive increased demand for Bitcoin as a hedge against rising prices. A successful “soft landing” for the economy could also foster continued institutional adoption and investment flows.
Despite these optimistic outlooks, Hougan cautioned that Bitcoin’s ascent may not be immediate in every scenario. He referenced Bitcoin’s approximately 50% decline during the March 2020 pandemic panic, prior to its subsequent recovery, as an example of short-term volatility.
He also acknowledged potential risks to the broader investment thesis, including threats posed by quantum computing, coordinated government restrictions, and a potential shift towards more stringent fiscal policies.
Nevertheless, Hougan maintained that investors might be overemphasizing short-term economic fluctuations. “For long-term investors, the big macro questions matter less than most people think,” he concluded.
