Bitcoin Whales Accumulate Despite Price Stagnation and Volatility

Large Bitcoin holders, commonly known as whales, are continuing to accumulate significant amounts of the cryptocurrency, a trend that contrasts with recent price stagnation and volatility. This accumulation by major market participants is occurring even as Bitcoin struggles to maintain recent price movement.
According to data from Lookonchain, since October 1, 2026, 40 newly created addresses have withdrawn approximately 9,458 BTC, valued at around $771.5 million, from Wintermute. This accumulation follows a period where whales had been selling, and it persists while Bitcoin’s price has faced resistance.
Bitcoin’s price action in recent weeks has been notably unimpressive. The cryptocurrency experienced rejections at the $87,000 mark on multiple occasions and subsequently dipped below $80,000. Earlier this week, Bitcoin saw a rebound to $85,000, but this was followed by a drop of over $3,000 within 36 hours. Currently, Bitcoin is trading below $82,000.
This accumulation by large wallets occurs as their total holdings remain substantial. As reported by CryptoQuant, large wallets held just over three million BTC in mid-September, representing the highest combined balance since November 21, 2025. Earlier reports indicated that large market participants purchased nearly 89,000 BTC within a single month.
In the broader context, Bitcoin’s price saw a recovery from under $62,000 in early August to reach $87,000 in September. The current period of accumulation by whales, following this recovery, presents a complex market signal. The broader market landscape has also presented challenges for Bitcoin’s forward path.
Despite the ongoing accumulation by whales, the implications for future price movements remain uncertain. The specific intentions behind these actions and the long-term strategy of these large holders are not definitively known. Uncertainty persists regarding whether this accumulation trend will continue and how it may ultimately impact Bitcoin’s price. The exact future price movements of Bitcoin are not predictable.
