Canton Network Eyes European, Asian Bonds After US Treasuries

Canton Network, a blockchain platform developed by Digital Asset, is expanding its reach beyond U.S. Treasuries to encompass global government debt. The network is currently exploring the tokenization of European and Asian government bonds, alongside efforts to collaborate with banks on issuing deposit tokens. This latter initiative is considered crucial, as a tokenized bond represents only one half of a complete transaction.

Expanding Tokenization Beyond U.S. Treasuries

Canton Network has already demonstrated the viability of tokenizing U.S. Treasuries for repurchase agreement (repo) transactions, with tokens serving as collateral for financing deals. This initial phase, launched in August 2026, has laid the groundwork for broader adoption.

The network’s next targets include European government bonds, such as U.K. Gilts and Eurozone government debt, as well as Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs). Early indications of this expansion are already evident. In January 2026, cross-border repo transactions involving tokenized U.K. Gilts were successfully executed on the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) platform.

In Japan, proof-of-concept trials for using JGBs as digital collateral commenced in April 2026. These trials have garnered significant participation from major Japanese financial institutions, including MUFG, Mizuho, and Nomura, signaling broad industry engagement.

Deposit Tokens: The Crucial Counterpart

Pilot projects associated with the Canton Network have also involved prominent entities like MUFG, LSEG, and Euroclear. Early 2026 saw multi-institution tests focusing on cross-border and cross-currency repo transactions, utilizing both tokenized deposits and gilts.

A deposit token is essentially a blockchain-based representation of a traditional commercial bank deposit. It remains bank money, issued by a bank and operating within existing legal frameworks, but it can now be transacted on the same network as the assets it is used to acquire.

Canton’s work on deposit tokens aims to facilitate banks in aligning their tokenized bond offerings with the cash components of transactions, all while adhering to current regulatory requirements.

The Promise of Atomic Settlement and 24/7 Liquidity

The ability to conduct both sides of a trade on a single ledger enables atomic settlement, where the bond and cash exchange simultaneously, or neither transaction occurs. This significantly streamlines the settlement process.

Furthermore, the Canton infrastructure supports round-the-clock on-chain repo operations. Unlike traditional bond markets, which operate within standard business hours, a 24/7 venue for collateral movement offers a substantial advantage to trading desks requiring liquidity, even on weekends.

DTCC’s Role and Future Outlook

A key player in the U.S. tokenization landscape is the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC). The DTCC is planning to introduce a tokenization service that will incorporate a select group of U.S. Treasuries represented on the Canton Network. This rollout is anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2026, with an initial focus on 25 securities.

Canton-connected platforms have also historically facilitated over half of all global digital bond issuances. The primary impact of this tokenization effort lies in enhancing collateral mobility. Financial institutions holding U.S. Treasuries, U.K. Gilts, and JGBs across various custodians and time zones often face challenges in swiftly moving collateral to where it is needed.

Navigating Timeline Risks and Key Milestones

Despite the progress, certain risks are associated with the project’s timeline. Several critical milestones, including the JGB initiatives and the DTCC service, are still in the proof-of-concept or planned rollout stages.

Key developments to monitor include the scheduled launch of DTCC’s Treasury service in the fourth quarter, the progression of Japanese bank trials into live repo activity, and the actual issuance of deposit tokens by banks on the Canton Network. The widespread adoption of deposit tokens will be a critical determinant of the overall scalability of these tokenization efforts.
