Circle Aims for Global Expansion, Targeting 40 Emerging Markets
New York, NY – October 16, 2026 – Circle, the issuer of the USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin, announced ambitious plans today to expand its reach into approximately 40 emerging and developing markets. The company’s strategic push will focus on regions including Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, aiming to significantly broaden the adoption of its digital currency.
A Turning Point for Blockchain Adoption
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire characterized the expansion as a pivotal moment for the cryptocurrency industry. He suggested that blockchain technology is transitioning from its experimental phase to widespread mainstream adoption, driven by a growing demand from individuals and businesses seeking access to the internet-based economy.
Strategic Acquisitions and Investments Underpin Expansion
The announcement comes on the heels of two significant financial maneuvers by Circle. The company is set to acquire Tazapay, a Singapore-based firm specializing in cross-border payments, for $400 million. This acquisition, pending regulatory approvals, is anticipated to finalize in 2027.
In addition to the Tazapay deal, Circle has secured a $100 million strategic investment from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.
Strong Growth in USDC Circulation
Circle reported that the circulation of USDC reached $73.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026. This figure represents a substantial 19% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. While Circle currently holds approximately 25% of the global stablecoin market, Tether’s USDT dominates with nearly 60%.
Regulatory Tailwinds Position USDC for Growth
Speaking at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Allaire highlighted two key regulatory developments that he believes will bolster USDC’s position. The first is the federal bank charter Circle received in July, and the second is the anticipated implementation of the US Genius Act in January 2027. Allaire contends that these advancements could solidify USDC’s standing as a legitimate digital dollar.
