Citi: China AI IPOs Stable Amid Valuation Dip

Hong Kong IPO Market Thrives on AI Hardware Amid Global Overbuilding Fears

Wall Street has grappled throughout 2026 with the question of whether the world is overbuilding artificial intelligence. Hong Kong’s initial public offering market, according to Citi, has largely responded with a confident nod and a willingness to invest.

In a commentary released October 14, 2026, Citi Research indicated that investor appetite for Chinese AI hardware companies seeking listings in Hong Kong remains robust. This sustained interest persists even as valuations experience pullbacks and global concerns about AI overinvestment continue to circulate.

Citi attributes the revival in Hong Kong’s IPO activity significantly to the interest from international investors. This influx is complemented by local liquidity and demand, which collectively contribute to the stability of these listings and provide market support from multiple directions.

AI-related listings were a primary driver behind a sharp increase in Hong Kong IPO fundraising during the first nine months of 2026. Citi further anticipates that technology deals will propel full-year proceeds to a record high for 2026.

While some technology stocks have seen declines of 10% or more, attributed to broader sector sell-offs or market reactions to specific IPOs, Citi’s analysis suggests this trend has not impacted core hardware companies. Demand for these supply-chain firms has remained strong despite market fluctuations.

Hong Kong’s capital markets have demonstrated a notable rebound across 2025 and 2026. A series of AI and chip-related listings, alongside follow-on offerings, has elevated IPO volumes beyond those of recent years. Prominent technology IPOs have also played a role in enhancing overall equity market liquidity and activity within the city.

This recovery is unfolding under considerable pressure. Geopolitical tensions and export restrictions continue to influence the region, introducing a layer of risk not typically associated with tech IPOs in other markets.

Against this backdrop, Citi views Hong Kong as an increasingly pivotal venue for AI and technology listings. For investors, a more compelling signal lies in the divergence within the AI sector. While concerns about overinvestment persist, capital continues to flow towards companies that provide the essential hardware components.

The research also highlights an optimistic outlook for enhanced market liquidity, should record technology proceeds materialize. However, potential further tightening of export restrictions could create challenges for the very hardware firms that investors are backing. While corrections of 10% or more have been absorbed thus far, a more significant downturn would present a different kind of stress test for the market.
