CME Group Reports Record Quarter for Crypto Trading
CME Group, the Chicago-based exchange operator, has announced its most successful quarter to date for cryptocurrency trading. In the third quarter of 2026, the company’s crypto futures and options suite generated a record $469.5 billion in notional trading volume.
Bitcoin products were the primary driver of this surge, accounting for $326.7 billion of the total quarterly notional volume. Ether products contributed an additional $118.8 billion. Combined, these two leading digital assets represented $445.5 billion of the overall volume, with other cryptocurrencies on CME’s platform making up the remaining approximately $24 billion.
During the quarter, the crypto suite saw an average of 196,000 contracts traded daily, while open interest remained stable at around 197,000 contracts.
These figures were released as part of CME Group’s broader quarterly earnings report on October 21. The company reported total revenue of $1.737 billion, marking a 13% increase compared to the same period last year. Across all asset classes it offers, CME averaged 29.4 million contracts traded per day.
The introduction of a 24/7 trading model for cryptocurrencies on May 29, 2026, has proven impactful. Through the third quarter, this continuous trading model generated over $3.7 billion in cumulative notional volume over weekends. The busiest weekend trading period occurred from August 21-23, 2026, when traders transacted 69,600 contracts valued at $554.7 million in notional terms.
The positive performance in crypto trading occurred against a backdrop of recovering underlying digital asset prices. Regulatory developments and growing optimism in Washington D.C. contributed to Bitcoin’s 43% rise and Ether’s 70% increase from their second-quarter lows.
Despite the overall record volume, CME’s crypto business experienced a decrease in average daily notional value and in the volume of micro-contracts traded during the period. Micro-contracts, which are smaller-sized futures contracts, are typically utilized by individual traders and smaller financial firms.
The company also expanded its crypto offerings, launching new Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures on October 19, 2026, just days before the earnings announcement. The inclusion of Uniswap, a decentralized exchange token, marks a significant step in bringing DeFi assets to a prominent traditional finance derivatives platform.
