Crypto Market Hit by Dual Shocks: Binance Hack and Wall Street Sell-Off

The cryptocurrency market is facing a double blow, with the $6.3 billion Binance exploit eroding confidence and a sharp sell-off on Wall Street dragging down risk assets. Bitcoin has breached its critical $80,000 support level, plummeting to a six-week low.

Crypto Prices Plummet Amidst Market Turmoil

Market data indicates a significant downturn across major cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin’s 24-hour trading volume has surged to approximately $194 billion, signaling intense selling pressure.

Reason 1: The $6.3 Billion Binance Hack

The Binance exploit now stands as the largest cryptocurrency hack in dollar terms. Bitcoin’s price fell from around $78,700, when initial reports surfaced, to a low of nearly $76,368 overnight. This decline pushed Bitcoin below the $80,000 support level it had previously maintained.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, widely known as CZ, has asserted that the actual damage is less severe than the headline figure suggests. He contrasted the situation with historical events like the Mt. Gox hack, which saw the loss of 650,000 BTC—more than 5% of Bitcoin’s supply at the time—and affected nearly all its users. Similarly, the FTX collapse impacted almost every customer. In Binance’s case, CZ stated that the exchange is fully covering all user losses.

Reason 2: Wall Street Experiences Worst Day Since June

U.S. stocks shed approximately $1.5 trillion in value during a single trading session, with major indexes on track for their worst performance since June.

Bitcoin’s correlation with tech stocks means that the decline in the Nasdaq and semiconductor shares has exacerbated the downward pressure on cryptocurrencies.

Reason 3: Key Support Level Breached

Analyst Michaël van de Poppe noted that Bitcoin faced rejection at the $81,000 mark, subsequently sliding rapidly towards $76,000 to close a price gap. It then encountered resistance again at $78,000. The levels he is closely monitoring are as follows:

Is This a Normal Pullback?

On-chain data from Glassnode suggests that the current downturn may not be as detrimental as it initially appears.

History Suggests Hack Crashes Can Be Short-Lived

Some investors have drawn parallels between the market’s reaction to the Binance hack and past exchange-related disasters.

While the Binance hack is significantly larger in scale than previous incidents, the current price drop has been roughly half as deep.

What Lies Ahead?

Bitcoin now faces a critical juncture, with the potential to establish a higher low or retrace towards its cycle low of $58,000. For the immediate future, key levels to watch are between $75,000 and $75,800 for support, and $80,000 for resistance.
