Weekend Volatility Sees Bitcoin and Altcoins Experience Flash Crash
The typical weekend lull in cryptocurrency markets was briefly shattered over the past several hours, as Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a sharp, albeit short-lived, downturn. The digital asset shed approximately $1,000 before rapidly recovering, in a move that appeared to be a flash crash.
Altcoins mirrored this volatility, with many exhibiting even more pronounced price swings during what is usually a calmer period. However, analysts anticipate further fluctuations as the new trading week commences.
The business week had started positively for Bitcoin, with the cryptocurrency surging to $84,250. This upward momentum proved unsustainable, however, as bearish sentiment took hold, driving the price down to $81,000 within hours. The recovery was equally swift, with BTC approaching the $84,000 mark again by Tuesday morning.
Bitcoin maintained a position near this level until Wednesday, when the release of September’s US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data caused a dip to $82,000, as inflation figures came in slightly higher than anticipated. Thursday saw the Producer Price Index (PPI) confirm this inflationary trend, leading to an initial nosedive for Bitcoin to $80,200. The bears then pushed the price further, reaching a monthly low of $79,800.
The subsequent rebound was notable, with the cryptocurrency jumping by several thousand dollars almost immediately. By Friday, Bitcoin had neared $83,000 once more, but its ascent was halted, and it remained below $82,000 as the weekend began. This preceded the aforementioned flash crash, which saw BTC fall from $81,600 to $80,750, before a rapid recovery to $82,000 and a subsequent retreat to its initial level.
Online analysts are increasingly vocal about the possibility of a “Black Monday,” citing several factors, including a broader stock market correction observed last week. This suggests that further volatility is likely to unfold on Monday.
Currently, Bitcoin’s market capitalization stands at $1.630 trillion, according to CoinMarketCap (CMC), with its dominance over altcoins returning to 60%.
Most larger-cap altcoins experienced a similar flash crash alongside Bitcoin, but many remain in negative territory on a daily basis. Ethereum (ETH) dipped to $2,360 and is currently struggling to maintain its position above $2,400. XRP continues its battle with the $1.30 support level, trading below it at present.
Among other altcoins, Zcash (ZEC), Solana (SOL), Hype (HYPE), Dogecoin (DOGE), Tron (TRX), Chainlink (LINK), and Cardano (ADA) are all trading in the red. Conversely, Monero (XMR), Rain (RAIN), and Hedera Hashgraph (HBAR) have posted gains of 3-4%. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) has once again captured attention, surging by 17% to $2.43.
The total cryptocurrency market capitalization has seen a slight daily decrease of 0.2%, now standing at $2.730 trillion on CMC.
