DeFi Development Boosts CHAD Preferred Stock Dividend to 14%

DeFi Development Corp. Boosts Preferred Stock Dividend to 14%

DeFi Development Corp., a publicly traded entity focused on acquiring Solana (SOL), announced Thursday it is raising the annual dividend rate on its CHAD preferred stock from 13% to 14%.

Dividend Increase Details

The 100 basis point increase, effective November 2, will elevate annual dividend payments from $1.30 to $1.40 per share, based on CHAD’s $10 stated value. This marks a 7.7% rise in annual dividend income per share.

CHAD, traded on Nasdaq, is structured to offer investors consistent income through cumulative dividends, payable each business day, contingent upon board approval. Launched in September, CHAD is a perpetual preferred stock with a variable rate, enabling DeFi Development to secure capital for additional SOL acquisitions while providing investors with regular dividend distributions.

Unlike common shares, CHAD prioritizes dividend income over direct participation in the company’s stock price appreciation. Its dividend rate is also subject to adjustments based on market conditions and the company’s financing strategy. At a purchase price of $10 per share, the new rate translates to a 14% annualized dividend yield. However, the actual yield is dependent on the purchase price and the company’s continued dividend payments.

“Increasing the rate to 14% strengthens that proposition as we broaden investor participation and scale CHAD,” stated Joseph Onorati, CEO of DeFi Development Corp.

Revenue Generation and Expansion

The company generates returns from its SOL holdings through staking, validator operations, and other treasury management strategies. These activities provide a revenue stream that supports its dividend obligations.

In September, DeFi Development also established a $300 million share issuance program for CHAD, with proceeds primarily designated for further SOL accumulation.

The dividend increase coincides with DeFi Development’s ongoing expansion of its Solana treasury, even amidst market volatility in the cryptocurrency sector. On Monday, the company reported its holdings had reached approximately 2.59 million SOL and SOL equivalents, following the acquisition of about 22,070 SOL in the preceding week. This represents a 12% increase in treasury holdings since its August earnings report.

Market Performance and Strategy

CHAD experienced record trading highs during the week ending October 9, even as the company’s common shares faced pressure in line with the broader crypto market. Earlier this month, the company also authorized a CHAD repurchase program, allowing for the buyback of preferred shares if market conditions necessitate. However, management indicated no immediate plans for repurchases.

This strategy aligns with a broader trend among publicly traded crypto treasury companies exploring alternative financing structures to build their digital asset reserves. Unlike companies holding Bitcoin, DeFi Development can earn native staking rewards from its SOL holdings. Nevertheless, its capacity to sustain dividend payments remains influenced by Solana’s price volatility, operational performance, and future financing conditions.
