Stablecoins Find New Purpose in DeFi Yield Generation
Holders of stablecoins are increasingly moving beyond simply parking their digital assets, opting instead to put their “digital dollars” to work. Data released by Token Terminal on October 25, 2026, reveals that total stablecoin deposits into decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols have surged to $24 billion.
This figure represents a substantial 560.8% increase over the past three years, indicating a significant shift in user behavior. The trend suggests that individuals are no longer solely using stablecoins as a temporary holding place between trades. Instead, they are actively depositing them into DeFi protocols to generate yield.
USDC Dominates DeFi Stablecoin Deposits
Not all stablecoins are experiencing equal growth in this sector. USD Coin (USDC) leads the pack, commanding a 38.2% share of DeFi deposits, which translates to approximately $9.2 billion.
Tether (USDT) follows in second place with roughly $4.9 billion, accounting for 20.3% of the total. This means USDC’s DeFi deposits are nearly double those of USDT.
Securing the third position is USDe, a more recent entrant to the stablecoin market, holding a 9.0% share with deposits around $2.2 billion. Collectively, these three assets represent about two-thirds of all stablecoin deposits within DeFi. Token Terminal’s dataset, which encompasses 193 digital assets, highlights a market that is concentrated at the top but also features a crowded landscape below.
The $24 billion deposited in DeFi represents approximately 8% of the total stablecoin market, which is currently valued at around $298.4 billion.
Lending Pools Show Strong Activity, With a Note of Caution
Additional data from DeFiStar.io offers another perspective. Stablecoin lending pools recorded a total value locked (TVL) of approximately $25.68 billion within a recent 24-hour period.
However, the DeFiStar.io figures present a minor caveat. Net flows over the past month have been slightly negative, with approximately $99.8 million in net withdrawals after accounting for accrued interest.
These deposits are primarily flowing into established lending platforms. Prominent protocols attracting these stablecoin deposits include Aave V3, Morpho, Sky Protocol, and Spark. These platforms operate similarly to on-chain savings and lending services, where depositors provide stablecoins, borrowers secure loans against collateral, and the interest paid by borrowers is distributed to the capital providers.
Risks and Future Outlook
Despite the attractive yields, the DeFi space is not without its risks. Potential hazards include smart contract vulnerabilities, protocol failures, and the depegging of stablecoins, underscoring that yield generation inherently carries risk.
The more than sixfold increase in deposits over three years suggests that users are increasingly viewing these protocols as a viable avenue for earning returns on their dollar-denominated holdings. USDC’s dominant 38.2% share in DeFi deposits indicates a clear preference among DeFi users for this stablecoin when deploying capital into yield-generating protocols. The emergence of USDe capturing 9.0% of deposits also signals that the market leadership is not static.
With roughly 92% of the total stablecoin market of approximately $298.4 billion remaining outside of DeFi deposits, the potential for further growth is substantial.
The recent net outflow of about $99.8 million serves as a point of observation. While small in comparison to the overall deposit volume, persistent or increasing outflows could signal that depositors are finding more attractive opportunities elsewhere or are becoming more risk-averse regarding protocol stability.
