Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Embrace Ethereum for Institutional Services

Two of the world’s leading financial institutions, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan, are significantly expanding their engagement with the Ethereum blockchain. Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch a digital asset custody service tailored for institutional clients, while JPMorgan has migrated its JPM Coin onto Ethereum’s main network.

Deutsche Bank’s Digital Asset Custody Service

Deutsche Bank first signaled its intentions for a digital asset custody offering on September 16, 2026, with further details emerging in October of the same year. The service is specifically designed for institutional clients, excluding retail traders. The bank’s target clientele includes corporations, asset managers, hedge funds, and sovereign institutions.

The initial suite of digital assets to be supported comprises Ether (ETH), Bitcoin (BTC), USDC, EURC, and EURAU. The planned rollout will commence in Germany, with subsequent expansion anticipated across Europe. Deutsche Bank aims to go live with the service within weeks, contingent upon securing the necessary regulatory approvals.

JPMorgan’s JPM Coin Moves to Ethereum Mainnet

Meanwhile, JPMorgan’s blockchain division, Kinexys, transitioned its JPM Coin (JPMD) to the Ethereum mainnet around October 19, 2026. This strategic move facilitates on-chain payments and peer-to-peer transfers within the Ethereum ecosystem. Previously, JPM Coin operated on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network.

JPM Coin will now operate alongside JPMorgan’s tokenized money-market funds, which were introduced in December 2025 and May 2026. As of October 2026, Kinexys had processed over $4 trillion in transactions, with an average daily volume of approximately $7 billion.

Market and Institutional Reactions

Neither announcement triggered an immediate price movement in Ether. Institutional responses were similarly subdued. JPMorgan’s actions are widely interpreted as a move towards greater utilization of public blockchains for institutional liquidity and asset tokenization.

Deutsche Bank’s custody service addresses a critical gap in the market: many large investors are currently unable to hold cryptocurrencies without a regulated and trusted custodian.

Implications for Institutional Clients

For institutional clients, these developments signal enhanced access. Corporate treasurers and hedge funds seeking exposure to ETH or euro stablecoins through a familiar banking partner may soon find this option available in Germany, pending regulatory clearance.

Key developments to monitor include Deutsche Bank’s ability to secure approvals and launch its service within its targeted timeframe, the speed of its expansion beyond Germany into the broader European market, and the extent to which Kinexys’ operations shift to the public Ethereum network from private or Layer 2 systems.
