Ethereum’s Bullish Signal Amidst Volatility: A Potential Rally on the Horizon?
The second-largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum (ETH), has experienced a 6% retracement over the past week. However, a significant development suggests that its bullish setup remains intact, with many market observers anticipating a potential new all-time high. Adding to the intrigue, a mysterious trader has reportedly invested millions in an extremely high-risk long position on the asset.
Key Technical Indicators Point to Strength
Popular X user Ash Crypto highlighted that ETH has now closed its fourth consecutive week above the 50-week moving average (MA). This occurred after the cryptocurrency bounced off multi-month support at $2,405. This sustained position above a key long-term trend indicator is seen as a strong signal that momentum is favoring buyers, despite recent price fluctuations.
“Four consecutive weekly closes above the 50-week MA is an encouraging signal for ETH,” one X user commented on the post. “Holding this level could strengthen the bullish outlook, but confirmation on the next few candles will be key.”
Analyst Predictions and Trader Sentiment
Many analysts believe ETH could be on the cusp of a significant surge. Ali Martinez recently pointed to an “Adam and Eve” bottoming pattern, identifying the neckline at $2,520 as a critical zone. “A sustained close above this level could confirm a bullish breakout and open the door for ETH to rally toward $2,640,” Martinez stated.
Meanwhile, analyst Ted noted that ETH is currently encountering resistance in the $2,560-$2,570 range. He suggests that reclaiming this area could pave the way for a price increase to $2,700. X user BLADE, acknowledging the recent correction, reminded followers that ETH has historically seen rallies following such dips. “It’s a simple dynamic that keeps repeating. Same base as the 2025 bottom, so naturally I’d expect the same run over the months ahead. My target: $5K,” they commented.
Investor sentiment appears to be growing increasingly aggressive. X user Gerla disclosed that Ethereum longs on Bitfinex have surged by 266% in just a few weeks, reaching their highest level since 2022. Further underscoring this aggressive stance, Ash Crypto revealed that an anonymous whale has opened a $50 million long position on ETH with 25x leverage, currently positioned less than $50 away from liquidation.
Potential Headwinds for Ethereum
Despite the prevailing optimism among analysts, two key developments suggest that ETH could face underperformance in the near future. The first concerns the recent performance of spot ETH Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs).
Last week, these investment vehicles recorded total outflows exceeding $540 million, indicating that institutional investors, including pension funds and hedge funds, have reduced their exposure to the cryptocurrency. More concerning, spot ETH ETFs have now experienced nine consecutive days of outflows, with September 28 marking the last day inflows surpassed outflows.
The second development is the increasing amount of ETH being held on cryptocurrency exchanges. According to CryptoQuant, this figure has climbed to a one-month high of approximately 14.9 million units. While this does not guarantee a price collapse, it does suggest an increase in immediate selling pressure.
