Ethereum Unstaking Jumps 392% Since October

Ethereum Unstaking Surges Amidst MetaMask Infrastructure Compromise

Ethereum’s unstaking activity has seen a dramatic surge, increasing by 392% since the beginning of October, according to data shared on X. By October 2, approximately 850,000 ETH was queued for withdrawal from the network’s validator set, marking the longest exit line Ethereum has experienced this year. This spike coincided with MetaMask Staking informing users that a portion of its infrastructure had been compromised.

Extended Wait Times for Exits

As of October 2, the estimated waiting period for unstaking had extended to around 14.77 days. This contrasts sharply with late September, when exit queues were in the lower to mid-100,000s ETH range. At its peak, the queue comprised between 850,000 and 850,736 ETH. This represented nearly 2% of the total staked ETH, which stood at roughly 43.6 million across approximately 878,000 active validators.

MetaMask Discloses Infrastructure Breach

On September 30, MetaMask Staking announced a compromise affecting its infrastructure. While block rewards totaling about 0.36 ETH across 18 blocks were briefly diverted, MetaMask assured users that no personal wallets or sensitive data were impacted. In response, MetaMask initiated the process to exit nearly 17,000 validators, holding approximately 523,000 ETH. A significant portion of this staked amount was linked to Lido’s operations. These exits were characterized as a precautionary measure and were anticipated to conclude by October 7.

Potential Profit-Taking and Market Impact

The substantial increase in the unstaking queue has led some observers, such as Jiang Zhuoer, founder of an LTC mining pool, to suggest that certain holders may be capitalizing on current prices to secure profits. During the period from September 30 to October 2, ETH traded within a narrow range, between $2,686 and $2,725. The extended wait times for unstaking mean that any potential selling pressure would be distributed over time rather than concentrated in a single market event.

Future Outlook for Staked ETH

With MetaMask’s exits expected to be completed by October 7, the overall unstaking queue is likely to decrease significantly, provided no new large-scale withdrawals emerge. The substantial volume of staked ETH tied to Lido’s operations that is currently exiting underscores how the actions of a single infrastructure partner can influence a much larger pool of staked assets on the Ethereum network. Despite the recent surge in unstaking, approximately 43.6 million ETH remains staked across roughly 878,000 validators, indicating that even at its peak, the exit queue constituted a relatively small fraction of the total staked supply.
