Crypto’s Short Attention Span Could Cost Investors, Grayscale Researcher Warns
Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, has cautioned that the cryptocurrency market’s tendency to chase fleeting trends may lead investors to overlook foundational platforms poised to benefit from an impending tokenization wave. He suggests that assets like Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain are being overshadowed by newer narratives surrounding privacy coins such as Zcash and derivatives platforms like Hyperliquid. Pandl’s core argument is that these established smart contract networks are strategically positioned to underpin a significant shift towards on-chain assets, potentially valued in the trillions.
Pandl articulated these views during an interview at the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore, with his remarks published on October 13, 2026. He highlighted that while the current excitement around privacy features and perpetual futures is understandable, it risks diverting attention from the critical infrastructure that traditional finance, or Wall Street, will require for blockchain adoption.
The Tokenization Boom and Shifting Investor Focus
Pandl linked his concerns to an anticipated surge in tokenization, a process that involves representing real-world financial assets as digital tokens on a blockchain. He identified three key categories for this transformation.
Furthermore, Pandl commented on the prevailing culture within the crypto space, noting that many enthusiasts appear to prioritize projects demonstrating high revenue generation. This dynamic, he suggested, creates an environment where long-term, stable investments in established platforms can be easily overlooked.
Grayscale’s perspective, Pandl admitted, is not universally held. The firm firmly believes that smart contract platforms are indispensable components of a robust crypto portfolio, a stance he acknowledged is not a consensus among crypto-native investors.
Performance Discrepancies and Underlying Value
Over the past year, Zcash has seen a remarkable +389% increase, while Hyperliquid has risen +100%, both outperforming Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) during the same period. Zcash is recognized for its privacy-centric design, and Hyperliquid is a platform focused on perpetual futures, a type of derivative contract allowing leveraged trading without an expiry date.
Grayscale has consistently positioned itself as a conduit between the cryptocurrency and traditional finance sectors. From this perspective, Pandl’s observations are consistent with the firm’s outlook. As Wall Street increasingly embraces blockchain technology, it will likely seek platforms with mature developer communities, proven track records, and the capacity to manage assets like stablecoins and tokenized securities at scale.
In Grayscale’s assessment, Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain meet these criteria. These networks are among the most widely utilized smart contract platforms. The expected growth in stablecoins and tokenized assets is anticipated to enhance transaction efficiency and reduce costs. Research accompanying Pandl’s remarks suggests that any platform facilitating a substantial portion of this activity could become a cornerstone of a diversified crypto portfolio.
Time Horizons and Competitive Landscape
Pandl’s argument essentially serves as a reminder about investment time horizons. While short-term gains have favored newer, trending narratives, his thesis centers on where value is likely to accrue as tokenization matures and scales as proponents predict.
The competitive aspect among these foundational platforms also warrants consideration. Although Pandl grouped Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain together, they are in direct competition for institutional engagement. Consequently, a tokenization boom may not benefit all three equally.
Key indicators to monitor include the actual growth of stablecoin and tokenized securities activity on these networks, as well as institutional announcements of products built upon them. Until such developments materialize, Pandl’s call remains contrarian in a market that currently seems to favor immediate excitement over fundamental value. Pandl himself conceded that many in the crypto community would likely disagree with his assessment.
