Lido Consolidates Staked ETH on Ethereum's 0x02 Validators, Driving Network Efficiency

Lido, a leading liquid staking protocol on Ethereum, has significantly increased its share of staked ETH on the network’s newer 0x02 validators. This strategic consolidation, enabled by Ethereum’s Pectra hard fork and EIP-7251, is reshaping the validator landscape and is projected to enhance network efficiency.

Ethereum’s Pectra hard fork, implemented in May 2025, introduced changes through EIP-7251. This upgrade allows validators using the newer 0x02 type to hold an effective balance of up to 2,048 ETH, a substantial increase from the previous 32 ETH cap for legacy validators. This change facilitates greater reward compounding within a single validator.

Lido has actively leveraged this upgrade. Its Curated Module v2 (CMv2), launched on July 27, 2026, is designed to consolidate over 8 million ETH, representing approximately 20% of all staked ETH. This consolidation involves migrating funds from more than 265,000 legacy 0x01 validators into an estimated 4,000 active 0x02 validators. According to the research findings, Lido’s share of staked ETH on these 0x02 validators has climbed from approximately 32% to around 52% following this migration.

The broader Ethereum network has also seen a notable shift, with the total staked ETH on 0x02 validators increasing by 2.8 million ETH. As of late October 2026, the share of all staked ETH on 0x02 validators approached 50%. This consolidation is expected to reduce the overall number of validators on the Ethereum network from an estimated 880,000 to approximately 628,000 once the process is complete. The research points to an expected reduction of about 29% in consensus attestation traffic per epoch, which should ease network load and cut operational overhead.

To address potential concerns regarding concentration, Lido’s CMv2 includes a bonding requirement for curated operators, where bonds can be seized for violations. Furthermore, Lido is developing a Community Staking Module (CSM), slated for mainnet in Q4 2026, which aims to allow permissionless operator participation.

While the consolidation is well underway, one uncertainty remains regarding the precise timeline for the CSM mainnet launch in Q4 2026. However, the ongoing migration signifies a substantial evolution in Ethereum’s staking infrastructure, driven by Lido’s strategic adoption of newer, more efficient validator types.

Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Lido has consolidated a large amount of staked ETH from older 0x01 validators onto newer 0x02 validators, increasing its share of staked ETH on these 0x02 validators significantly. Whether CSM lands on schedule in Q4 2026.

Broader Context

Source materials place the factual news in this context: Ethereum’s validator set is in the middle of a quiet renovation.
