Microsoft Recaptures $4 Trillion Valuation on Azure Surge

Microsoft Reclaims $4 Trillion Valuation Amid AI Investment Confidence

Microsoft has rejoined the ranks of companies valued at $4 trillion, closing at a market capitalization of $4.02 trillion on October 12, 2026. This marks the first sustained period the tech giant has held a valuation above this significant threshold since October 29, 2025.

The resurgence is particularly noteworthy as it addresses a lingering question across the technology sector: whether substantial investments in artificial intelligence will ultimately yield profitable returns. For Microsoft, at least, the market’s current sentiment suggests a resounding “yes.”

Microsoft’s stock has seen a remarkable recovery, surging over 50% from its lowest point in June 2026.

Azure Drives Growth and Investor Confidence

The primary catalyst for this rally is Azure, Microsoft’s robust cloud computing division. In the June quarter, Azure revenue experienced a substantial year-over-year increase of 43%.

Company management anticipates this growth trajectory to accelerate further. Financial guidance indicates an expected growth rate of 45% in constant currency, a metric that neutralizes the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations.

Adding to the positive outlook, Microsoft’s remaining performance obligations (RPO) for cloud and AI contracts have climbed to $678 billion, an impressive 84% increase. RPO represents revenue that customers have committed to but which Microsoft has not yet recognized. For investors scrutinizing AI expenditures, this figure carries significant weight, signaling that enterprises are making substantial financial commitments to AI infrastructure rather than merely engaging in experimental pilot projects.

New AI Chip Signals Strategic Hardware Push

On the same day it crossed the $4 trillion valuation mark, Microsoft also made a significant hardware announcement. The company officially unveiled its Azure Maia 300 AI chip at the OCP Global Summit on October 12, 2026.

This proprietary chip is designed to reduce Microsoft’s reliance on graphics processing units from competitors like Nvidia and AMD. Furthermore, it is expected to enhance operational efficiency within the company’s extensive data center network.

Microsoft initially surpassed the $4 trillion valuation milestone in July 2025, becoming only the second company globally to achieve such a high valuation at that time. The stock subsequently experienced a decline as concerns grew regarding the profitability of AI investments and the future pace of cloud growth.

Despite reclaiming this valuation, Microsoft now stands as the fourth-largest U.S. company by market capitalization, trailing behind Nvidia, Apple, and Amazon.

Outlook and Key Watchpoints

The strong contracted demand, evidenced by the $678 billion backlog, appears to validate Microsoft’s considerable investments in cloud and AI infrastructure.

However, potential risks remain. The projected 45% growth for Azure is a forecast, not a certainty, and the substantial backlog must be converted into recognized revenue over time.

Key indicators to monitor moving forward include whether Azure achieves its constant currency growth targets, the speed at which the RPO figure translates into reported sales, and whether the Maia 300 chip delivers a meaningful improvement in data center economics.
