Monero Surges 11% Weekly; AIs Predict 2026 Zcash Flip

Monero Surges Amidst Market Downturn, AI Weighs Potential to Overtake Zcash

While most major cryptocurrencies have experienced declines over the past week, Monero (XMR) has bucked the trend, posting an 11% gain to approach $600. Despite this surge, Monero remains the second-largest privacy coin, trailing behind Zcash (ZEC). This analysis explores whether Monero can surpass its rival in market capitalization this year, drawing insights from three prominent AI-powered chatbots.

ChatGPT’s Outlook: Plausible but Not Probable

ChatGPT suggested that Monero could indeed overtake Zcash in market capitalization within the remaining months of the year. However, the AI characterized this as a “plausible scenario rather than the most likely outcome,” citing the substantial market cap difference of over $8 billion.

The chatbot identified Monero’s mandatory privacy features, where all transactions are automatically shielded, as its strongest bullish argument. In contrast, Zcash offers both shielded and transparent transaction options. ChatGPT noted that this distinction could attract capital if investors increasingly favor privacy by default, though it does not guarantee superior price performance.

Conversely, ChatGPT pointed to Monero’s limited accessibility on cryptocurrency exchanges as its primary obstacle. Only a select few trading platforms, including KuCoin, MEXC, and Kraken (in certain jurisdictions), support XMR. Major exchanges like Binance and Coinbase do not offer Monero services, with Binance having delisted the coin in 2024.

Perplexity’s Perspective: A Long Shot with Catalysts

Perplexity also projected that Monero could surpass Zcash this year, but assigned a low probability to this development. The AI acknowledged Zcash’s leadership in the privacy coin sector, attributing it to a significant rally earlier this year and substantial capital inflows into its ecosystem.

Perplexity maintained that Monero remains the stronger “pure privacy” asset but faces significant challenges due to restricted venue access. The chatbot suggested that a listing on a major exchange, the introduction of a spot XMR exchange-traded fund (ETF), or a sharp correction in Zcash’s price could help narrow the gap.

“XMR can flip ZEC in 2026, but ZEC is the more likely leader under the current setup,” Perplexity stated. “A realistic framing is: ZEC retains the edge unless Monero gets a concrete liquidity or regulatory-access catalyst; if that happens, the gap could close quickly because XMR’s core privacy demand remains intact.”

Gemini’s Analysis: Divergent Paths and Regulatory Headwinds

Google’s Gemini chatbot highlighted the significant differences between Monero and Zcash, despite their shared category. Gemini described XMR as the default choice for pure privacy and network utility, while ZEC has attracted substantial institutional investment, leading to a clear divergence in market valuation.

“It comes down to a fundamental clash between pure peer-to-peer usage versus institutional adoption and exchange liquidity,” Gemini explained.

The chatbot deemed a potential flip by New Year’s Eve possible but acknowledged significant headwinds. Gemini suggested this could only occur if the broader crypto market prioritizes real-world usage, self-custody, and censorship resistance, thereby increasing demand for XMR.

However, Gemini concluded that as long as the global regulatory landscape favors compliance-ready tokens, Zcash is likely to maintain its advantage.
