NEAR Protocol’s native token experienced a significant surge over the weekend, climbing 16%, accompanied by a substantial increase in trading activity, according to The Motley Fool.
Weekend Rally and Trading Volume Surge
The most pronounced upward movement occurred on October 10, 2026, when NEAR’s value jumped as much as 11%, reaching $6.00 on the Binance exchange. While the token later settled to around $5.64, daily trading volume reached an all-time high of approximately $3.54 billion, marking a 98% increase. In the four weeks leading up to mid-October, NEAR’s price appreciated by at least 83%, with some estimates placing the gain between 138% and 172%. This rally propelled NEAR’s market capitalization to roughly $7.2 billion when the token was trading near $5.50, re-establishing its position among the top 20 digital assets.
NEAR Intents Driving Cross-Chain Activity
A key driver behind this performance appears to be NEAR Intents, the protocol’s cross-chain functionality. This feature allows users to specify desired outcomes, with the system then routing transactions across different blockchains. NEAR Intents has facilitated over $31 billion to $33 billion in cumulative cross-chain volume across more than 30 networks. In September alone, swap volume reached $4.8 billion, a 72.9% increase from the previous month.
Impact of New ETF and Proposed Supply Reduction
Further bolstering NEAR’s profile, Bitwise launched the first U.S. spot NEAR Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) on September 29, 2026, trading under the ticker NRR. The fund attracted nearly $58 million in inflows during its inaugural week.
Additionally, a governance proposal is currently under consideration that aims to reduce NEAR’s maximum annual token issuance from 2.5% to 1.6% over the next 24 months. This proposal is still in progress and has not yet been finalized.
Exploit and Market Reaction
Despite the positive momentum, NEAR Intents experienced a $3.8 million exploit in early October. However, the stolen funds were recovered within 24 hours, and the incident did not appear to have a lasting negative impact on the token’s performance. The token’s price movement on October 10, which saw it dip from $6.00 to around $5.64 within the same trading session, occurred concurrently with the proposed issuance reduction.
Key Indicators to Watch
The market will be closely monitoring several key indicators moving forward. These include the continued monthly volume growth of NEAR Intents beyond September’s $4.8 billion, the sustained inflows into the NRR ETF after its initial launch week, and the outcome of the governance vote on the proposed token issuance reduction.
