Onlend Unveils Decentralized Platform for Custom Lending Applications
Onlend, a new decentralized infrastructure platform, has launched with the aim of simplifying the creation and operation of bespoke lending products for a range of financial entities. Developed by a team with prior experience scaling a prominent DeFi lending protocol, Onlend empowers fintechs, asset managers, curators, and asset issuers to build and manage their own on-chain lending applications without the need for extensive foundational technology development.
Tapping into a Growing Market
The project enters a market with significant untapped potential. Global debt has surged past $350 trillion, according to the Institute of International Finance, while active loans across decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols currently stand at approximately $33 billion, as reported by DefiLlama. While these figures represent distinct markets, they highlight the nascent stage of on-chain lending. Concurrently, the infrastructure supporting on-chain financial activities is expanding. The stablecoin market has surpassed $300 billion, and the value of tokenized real-world assets has reached around $39 billion, creating fertile ground for new lending products.
Addressing the Infrastructure Gap
Despite these opportunities, launching custom lending products remains a complex undertaking. Existing lending protocols offer established markets but often impose limitations on how teams can configure and manage their specific lending use cases. Conversely, building custom infrastructure from the ground up demands substantial engineering resources and development time. Onlend aims to bridge this gap with a permissionless, no-code platform that enables users to launch lending applications tailored to their unique use cases, user bases, and operational requirements.
Flexible Configuration and Advanced Features
Through Onlend, developers can customize supported assets, including multi-collateral and multi-borrow options, collateral parameters, interest rate models, price oracles, liquidation mechanisms, fees, and administrative permissions. Applications can be designed with open or restricted access, feature a customizable white-label interface, and operate under either active management or immutable rules. A key technical differentiator is Onlend’s support for advanced interest rate models beyond traditional utilization-based curves. These include fixed rates, rates tied to external benchmarks like staking yields, and targeted rates for specific borrower segments.
Diverse Applications Across Financial Services
This flexibility opens up a wide array of potential applications. Fintechs and neobanks can integrate collateral-backed borrowing directly into their existing consumer applications, adding lending functionality without extensive in-house development or reliance on rigid third-party protocols. Asset managers and curators can establish and manage lending markets aligned with their investment strategies, maintaining control over market configurations and generating revenue. Issuers of tokenized real-world assets can create dedicated lending markets using their assets as collateral. Similarly, stablecoin issuers, liquid staking protocols, and other DeFi projects can develop lending products tailored to their specific ecosystems.
Onlend is also designed with the emerging agentic economy in mind, where AI agents could autonomously lend and borrow capital to finance their operations. This approach distinguishes Onlend from established protocols like Aave, which requires an approval process for introducing new assets into governed markets, and Morpho, which allows permissionless market creation but with immutable market parameters. Onlend combines permissionless application creation with extensive customization, ongoing management options, and branded interfaces.
Experienced Team and Future Outlook
The project is backed by a team with experience from firms such as Flowdesk, MEV Capital, and Folks Finance. These individuals have previously contributed to scaling a lending protocol to over $400 million in peak total value locked and $13 billion in cumulative deposits volume. With initial testnet deployments slated for Q4 2026, Onlend is positioning itself as essential infrastructure for a new generation of lending applications, enabling teams to control their financial products rather than being solely dependent on existing lending markets.
