Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has reaffirmed XRP’s position as the company’s top priority, addressing recent attention drawn by announcements concerning its new RLUSD stablecoin. Garlinghouse clarified Ripple’s strategic approach, emphasizing that the company will only pursue initiatives that benefit XRP and explaining the rationale behind potentially utilizing other assets like fiat or RLUSD for certain transactions.
Speaking at the Ripple Swell event in New York on October 27, Garlinghouse acknowledged that the RLUSD announcements may have diverted attention from XRP, which the company internally refers to as its “North Star.” He stated, “We only want to do things that are good for XRP,” adding that Ripple would not engage in activities detrimental to the token’s interests.
Strategic Asset Use and Long-Term Vision
Garlinghouse further elaborated on Ripple’s evolving business model, describing it as a blockchain infrastructure company that has expanded beyond payments into corporate treasury and prime brokerage services. He noted that while XRP is foundational to these operations, its suitability varies by use case. “We think XRP is extremely efficient in some use cases and, frankly, probably not in other use cases,” Garlinghouse said. “And that’s okay.”
This strategic flexibility extends to the use of different transaction methods. The CEO explained that Ripple might opt for fiat currencies or its RLUSD stablecoin for specific transactions. “I’d rather see XRP do a small percentage of a customer’s transaction than zero percent,” he remarked. “So if that means I’m going to use other methods, whether it’s fiat or a stablecoin, RLUSD, that’s great, because that still means I’m getting some of that pie.” He encouraged observers to consider the overall transaction market rather than solely the portion captured by XRP.
Looking ahead, Garlinghouse expressed a long-term vision for XRP as the “institutional gold standard for crypto rails.” He anticipates that in the next five years, XRP will become widely accessible for managing money, receiving payments, investing, and engaging in lending and borrowing.
Institutional Developments and Market Context
These statements were made amidst a series of institutional developments announced by Ripple during Swell. The company revealed a strategic partnership with Robinhood, encompassing stablecoins, treasury operations, institutional settlement, and financing. Additionally, BNY Mellon has expanded its relationship with Ripple, now supporting both XRP and RLUSD on its institutional digital asset custody platform. Ripple’s National Trust Bank also received final regulatory approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, completing a process that began with conditional approval in 2025.
In terms of market performance, XRP was trading near $1.30 at the time of writing, according to CoinGecko. The cryptocurrency saw a 2% decrease in the past 24 hours and a nearly 4% dip over seven days. Longer-term trends showed XRP down almost 13% in the last month and a 50% plunge compared to the same period last year.
Despite the recent price fluctuations and the introduction of RLUSD, Ripple’s strategic direction, as articulated by its CEO, indicates a continued commitment to XRP’s foundational role while exploring broader market opportunities through stablecoins and expanded institutional services.
