CSD BR Pioneers Blockchain for Ownership Records, Mirroring Assets on XRP Ledger
Brazil’s central securities depository (CSD), CSD BR, has taken a significant step by placing ownership records on a public blockchain for the first time. The institution, which manages over BRL 22 trillion in registered assets, has initiated the mirroring of investment fund shares onto the XRP Ledger. This move marks the initial phase of a partnership with Ripple, announced on September 29, and begins with fund shares from the Brazilian investment bank BTG Pactual.
XRP Ledger Serves as a Mirror, Not the Primary Record
CSD BR’s internal systems will continue to function as the authoritative source for registration, deposit, and settlement. The XRP Ledger, in this context, operates as a supplementary layer, enabling authorized participants to review and audit records in near real-time.
The implemented model aligns with Brazil’s existing regulatory framework and did not necessitate new approvals. CSD BR holds authorization from both the Central Bank of Brazil and the Brazilian Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM).
Rationale Behind Mirroring as the Initial Step
Daniel Polano Spreafico, head of products and clients at CSD BR, explained that mirroring represents the most secure approach to integrating new technology into critical market infrastructure. This phase ensures no changes for investors, issuers, or participants. Silvio Pegado, Ripple’s managing director for Latin America, described the transition from pilot programs to live record-keeping within a national capital market as a landmark achievement for the industry.
Future Expansion Plans
Following the validation of this initial phase, the partners intend to broaden the application of blockchain technology to include the issuance and trading of native assets among authorized participants. Specific asset classes under consideration for future integration include Real Estate Receivables Certificates (CRI) and Agribusiness Receivables Certificates (CRA), both prominent segments of Brazil’s fixed-income market. The roadmap also includes the incorporation of privacy features and expansion into other asset classes and international markets.
XRP Token Price Remains Unaffected
The news of this adoption has not impacted the price of the XRP token. Several XRP holders on the social media platform X expressed disappointment that this latest Ripple partnership has had no discernible effect on the token’s valuation.
A contributing factor to this lack of price movement is the current operational structure. During this phase, settlement remains within CSD BR’s existing systems. The arrangement leverages the XRP Ledger’s infrastructure rather than utilizing XRP as a settlement asset, thereby limiting any immediate direct demand for the token.
