Ripple's National Trust Bank Receives Final OCC Approval for Digital Asset Services

Ripple’s national trust bank, Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB), has secured final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), completing its chartering process. This regulatory milestone allows RNTB to manage reserves for its stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD), act as a collateral trustee, and provide digital asset custody services under federal oversight.

RNTB had previously received conditional approval from the OCC in December 2025. The final approval suggests its authorization to manage the reserves backing RLUSD, serve as a collateral trustee for RLUSD holders, and offer digital asset custody. RLUSD continues to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, a New York Department of Financial Services-regulated entity.

This development places Ripple’s trust bank operations within a federally supervised framework, aligning with a broader trend among cryptocurrency firms seeking OCC charters. Circle achieved final OCC approval in July, while Coinbase received preliminary approval in April. Crypto.com and Stripe-owned Bridge obtained conditional approvals in February.

It is important to note that national trust banks are federally chartered institutions primarily focused on holding and managing assets. Unlike traditional commercial banks, most national trust banks do not accept deposits or make loans and typically do not carry Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insurance. This distinction clarifies the scope of RNTB’s authorized activities.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse commented on the development on X on Monday, stating, “We’ve always said crypto and banks work better together — this is what that looks like. Real innovation, real accountability, federal oversight.”
