Robinhood, the trading platform serving 28.6 million funded customers, is integrating a digital dollar developed by Ripple, the company co-founded by the creators of the XRP cryptocurrency. Ripple’s RLUSD token became available Tuesday on Robinhood’s proprietary blockchain and its Bitstamp exchange, with plans for wider integration into the main Robinhood app later this year, according to a Ripple announcement.
RLUSD is a stablecoin, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a fixed value equivalent to one U.S. dollar. This feature facilitates the rapid transfer of funds across blockchains, bypassing the need to wait for traditional banking hours. Launched in December 2024, Ripple stated that RLUSD’s market capitalization, representing the total value of all circulating tokens, has now surpassed $2.5 billion.
In addition to the stablecoin integration, Robinhood will leverage Ripple Treasury to manage its global treasury operations. This software solution handles a company’s cash management, encompassing everything from payment processing to cash-flow forecasting and risk assessment. A key feature is intercompany netting, which allows different divisions of a company to offset mutual debts, thereby reducing the volume of actual payments that need to be processed.
Ripple Prime, a prime brokerage service that provides lending and trade clearing for hedge funds and other institutional clients, already offers lending and margin financing for approximately 20 digital assets to Bitstamp. Ripple acquired the firm, then known as Hidden Road, for $1.25 billion in a deal announced in April 2025.
Clients of Ripple Prime also gain access to spot trading on Bitstamp, enabling purchases at prevailing market prices. Later this year, Ripple Prime will introduce support for perpetual futures on the exchange, which are contracts that speculate on a cryptocurrency’s future price and do not have an expiration date. Robinhood finalized its acquisition of Bitstamp, one of the longest-standing cryptocurrency exchanges globally, in June 2025 for approximately $200 million. The majority of Bitstamp’s trading volume originates from institutional participants.
Robinhood intends to utilize RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, the blockchain underpinning XRP, for institutional settlement purposes within Bitstamp’s institutional business. This process involves the finalization and payment of large trades.
“Utility is what drives stablecoins forward. By working with Ripple, Bitstamp and Robinhood will have access to RLUSD for institutional settlement, Ripple Treasury for our operations, and Ripple Prime for financing,” stated Johann Kerbrat, senior vice president and general manager of Robinhood Crypto and International. “This is the vision of a connected, global financial system.”
Robinhood, which had previously reduced its cryptocurrency listings amid regulatory scrutiny of Ripple and other crypto firms by the SEC, reintroduced XRP for its U.S. customers in November 2024. The company’s treasury department will now be supported by Ripple’s software solutions.
The trading platform recently underwent a workforce reduction, cutting approximately 10% of its staff in June. This decision followed a 34% decline in revenue from its crypto transaction business during the first quarter, which amounted to $134 million. Robinhood is scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results after market close on Tuesday, marking the first report to encompass a full quarter since the launch of Robinhood Chain on July 1.
