Samsung Wallet Now Supports USDC Stablecoin Transactions on Solana for U.S. Users

Samsung Wallet has integrated support for USDC stablecoin transactions on the Solana blockchain, making the digital currency accessible to eligible U.S. Galaxy users directly within the app. This move aims to offer mainstream access to stablecoin functionality without requiring users to download separate cryptocurrency applications or manage private keys.

The new feature allows users to buy, hold, send, and receive USDC on compatible Galaxy devices running Android 13 or later. According to the announcement, this service is available on approximately 82 million compatible Galaxy devices across the U.S.

Bastion is providing the stablecoin custody and infrastructure, with Coinbase serving as the sub-custodian through its Coinbase Prime Vault. Samsung has clarified that the account created via this service functions as a crypto wallet, distinct from a traditional bank account.

Users can send USDC to other Samsung Wallet users in the U.S. without incurring a transfer fee from Samsung. However, external transfers to compatible crypto wallets may be subject to fees from other providers. The service also facilitates sending money to qualifying bank accounts in over 60 countries.

Transaction fees apply for certain operations: topping up the wallet using a credit card, including via Samsung Pay, carries a 4% fee, and withdrawals to a bank account or debit card also incur a fee. As an incentive, new users making a first top-up of $50 or more will receive $25 in USDC.

The service is open to U.S. residents aged 18 and older, excluding those in New York. Samsung initially teased plans for stablecoin support over the summer, with a more concrete announcement on October 7, specifying the use of Solana for USDC transfers. The stablecoin accounts officially went live on Thursday.

Samsung has expressed intentions to explore online and in-store stablecoin payments and potentially expand the service to additional markets. However, any such expansion is contingent upon local regulations, highlighting a key uncertainty for the service’s future global reach.

This integration is positioned as a significant step toward broader stablecoin adoption, potentially enhancing the utility of both USDC and the Solana blockchain by simplifying money movement globally.
