Schwartz: XRP Ledger Not Aiming to Be Ethereum, Outlines 2027 Vision

XRP Ledger’s Purpose Misunderstood, Says Ripple CTO Emeritus

David Schwartz, chief architect of the XRP Ledger and Ripple’s CTO Emeritus, believes that many individuals who hold or follow XRP do not fully grasp the intended purpose of its underlying network.

Speaking at a Nasdaq event celebrating Evernorth’s public listing, Schwartz highlighted a prevalent misconception regarding the XRP Ledger’s position among major blockchains. He characterized its functionality as exceeding that of Bitcoin but falling short of Ethereum or Solana, a deliberate design choice to occupy a specific niche.

Schwartz explained that the ledger was engineered for a focused set of financial operations rather than general-purpose computing. These specific tasks include:

This targeted approach, he noted, enhances the network’s efficacy for certain applications while rendering it unsuitable for others. It is not designed to accommodate every type of developer-created application. Instead, the ledger offers what he termed “curated financial primitives,” developed to align with the stringent standards expected by financial institutions.

When questioned about the incentives for banks or financial firms to build on the network, Schwartz outlined three key advantages:

Schwartz advised XRP Ledger proponents against anticipating a singular blockchain solution. While Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin operates on the XRP Ledger, he emphasized the necessity of its presence on other networks to broaden user access and enhance liquidity.

He articulated his vision in personal terms, observing that individuals often leave funds dormant in bank accounts due to the perceived effort involved in moving them to interest-bearing alternatives. His aspiration is for the financial industry to evolve to a point where users are solely concerned with their money’s performance, not its physical location.

Regarding artificial intelligence, Schwartz posited that high-volume payments between AI agents could be facilitated by rapid, low-cost payment channels, with final settlement occurring on a blockchain. He anticipates a global landscape where some nations emerge as net purchasers of AI services and others as net sellers, necessitating a neutral settlement network to manage these economic imbalances. He did not explicitly state that the XRP Ledger would fulfill this role.

Looking towards 2027, Schwartz referenced Ripple’s strategic acquisitions of GTreasury and Hidden Road, noting their integration into a single business unit. The company intends to cross-sell products to existing clients who manage trillions of dollars through systems that currently do not involve cryptocurrency.

Schwartz concluded by asserting that Evernorth’s listing signifies the growing convergence of cryptocurrency and traditional finance, offering investors avenues to hold XRP within retirement accounts and on corporate balance sheets.
