Schwartz: XRP Wins Regardless of Bitcoin's Global Settlement Dominance

XRP Ledger Success Could Drive Token Value, Even in Bitcoin-Dominated World, Says Ripple CTO Emeritus
David Schwartz, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer Emeritus, has offered one of his most direct explanations to date on how XRP’s value could increase as the XRP Ledger (XRPL) achieves success. He posited that the digital asset would retain a significant role, even in a global financial landscape dominated by Bitcoin for settlement.
“Even if you imagine a world where nearly all settlement is done using bitcoin,” Schwartz wrote on the social media platform X, “a successful XRPL would probably host several versions of wrapped or bridged Bitcoin, and XRP will capture value bridging them.”
The Debate Sparking the Explanation
Schwartz’s remarks emerged during a vigorous discussion on X concerning the primary drivers of XRP’s price. XRP commentator Saul contended that the XRPL burns transaction fees not to incentivize validators for block production, but rather to avoid inflating the price. He argued that the deflationary effect stemming from these minimal fees has a negligible direct impact on XRP’s market value. This viewpoint was met with disagreement from another user, who asserted that the fee burn was a deliberate design feature and accused Saul of misunderstanding the ledger’s mechanics.
Schwartz’s Core Thesis
Schwartz then succinctly articulated his perspective: “Low fees and reliable operation make XRPL a good place to move and store value. That draws value onto the network, and XRP captures part of it because of advantages no other asset on the ledger has.”
Three Pillars of XRP Value Capture
According to Schwartz, XRP possesses several inherent advantages on the XRPL:
- Bridging Asset: XRP’s primary function as a bridge currency for cross-border payments and exchanges is a key value driver.
- Liquidity: Its role in facilitating liquidity across various markets and exchanges contributes to its demand.
- Decentralization: The decentralized nature of the XRP Ledger, with its distributed validator set, enhances trust and utility.
“All of those things can help drive value and demand,” Schwartz stated.
The Sole Scenario for XRP’s Decline
Schwartz deemed it “very unlikely” that the XRPL could achieve widespread adoption in financial applications while XRP itself experiences minimal demand. He suggested this scenario might only arise if a single, overwhelmingly dominant settlement asset emerged globally, a prospect he also considers improbable.
Even in such an extreme case, his Bitcoin analogy implies XRP would still find a purpose. As long as multiple tokenized versions of the dominant asset exist on the XRPL, XRP could serve as the essential bridge connecting them.
Implications for XRP Holders
Schwartz’s argument directly links XRP’s long-term value proposition to the actual utilization of the XRP Ledger, moving beyond solely fee-burning mechanisms or speculative trading. The success of this thesis hinges on the XRPL’s ability to attract and sustain significant real-world financial activity, which remains the central unanswered question for the network’s future.
