SkyAI Sells Entire Solana Treasury, Launches $201.3 Million Share Buyback Amid Strategic Pivot

SkyAI, formerly Sharps Technology, has divested its entire Solana (SOL) treasury and initiated a tender offer to repurchase up to $201.3 million of its own shares and warrants. This strategic pivot follows significant unrealized losses on its cryptocurrency holdings and a re-evaluation of its asset management approach.
As of October 16, SkyAI held approximately $223.8 million in cash following the liquidation of its SOL assets, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The tender offer, launched on or before October 16, allows shareholders and warrant holders to sell their securities directly back to SkyAI at a fixed price. The offer covers up to 95% of each class of the company’s outstanding shares and warrants and is funded entirely by its available cash reserves. Notably, the company stated that the tender offer is no longer tied to SOL’s price, a condition that had been initially planned when the buyback was announced on October 11.
SkyAI originally launched its Solana treasury strategy in August 2025, raising over $400 million through a private placement. In the subsequent month, the company acquired more than 2 million SOL, establishing a position valued at over $400 million at the time. By the end of 2025, SkyAI held approximately 2.08 million SOL, with a cost basis of $403.1 million, equating to roughly $194 per token. However, by the close of 2025, the value of these holdings had decreased to $250.1 million, resulting in approximately $153 million in unrealized losses. These losses reflect broader market pressures experienced by companies that had accumulated SOL as a treasury asset.
By February 2026, publicly traded companies with Solana treasuries collectively faced over $1.5 billion in unrealized losses, as declining token prices impacted their holdings and share valuations. SOL, which fell to around $62 in June, was trading near $104 as of Monday, according to CoinGecko data.
Despite the shift away from SOL, SkyAI intends to continue developing its financial platform, which aims to combine stablecoin infrastructure on Solana with artificial intelligence. SkyAI shares closed Monday at $2.79, marking a 5.3% increase on the day, according to Yahoo Finance data. Over the past month, the stock has gained approximately 65%, though it remains down about 41% over the past year.
Key uncertainties remain regarding the tender offer, including the exact date of its closure, the specific repurchase price for shares and warrants, and the total volume of securities that may be repurchased. The future performance of SkyAI’s financial platform also remains to be seen.
Why This Matters
SkyAI’s decision to liquidate its substantial Solana holdings and launch a significant share buyback signals a strategic re-evaluation of its treasury management. This move, occurring amidst broader market pressures that have coincided with over $1.5 billion in unrealized losses for publicly traded Solana treasury companies by February 2026, highlights the volatility associated with holding crypto assets as treasury reserves. The company’s commitment to continuing its financial platform development, despite past unrealized losses on SOL, indicates a focus on its core business objectives.
Broader Context
SkyAI’s strategic pivot from accumulating Solana (SOL) to divesting its entire treasury and initiating a tender offer for share repurchases underscores a significant shift in its corporate financial strategy. This action is contextualized by the company’s own experience with approximately $153 million in unrealized losses on its SOL holdings by the end of 2025, a situation mirrored across the market where similar companies faced substantial combined unrealized losses.
