Starknet Enhances DeFi Privacy with New Shadow Accounts Feature

Starknet and StarkWare have introduced Shadow Accounts, a new privacy feature within the STRK20 framework designed to decouple decentralized finance (DeFi) interactions from users’ primary wallet addresses. This initiative aims to bolster user privacy and mitigate the risks associated with the common practice of wallet address reuse.

The core issue Shadow Accounts address is wallet address reuse, a prevalent practice in DeFi. When a single wallet is used for all transactions, it creates a traceable history on the public blockchain. This trail can be analyzed by third parties, potentially revealing a user’s financial positions, habits, and holdings, thereby increasing the risk of unwanted tracking and targeted attacks. Starknet and StarkWare aim to make this on-chain trail significantly more difficult to follow.

Shadow Accounts enable users to generate separate, pseudonymous addresses specifically for interacting with DeFi applications. These accounts are funded from shielded STRK20 balances. The functionality relies on a contract named ShadowAccountAnonymizer, which serves to obscure the on-chain link connecting the shadow account back to the user’s main wallet. While the balances and transactions conducted through a shadow account remain visible on the blockchain, the direct link to the owner’s primary wallet is deliberately obscured.

Designed to be per-dapp, Shadow Accounts allow users to maintain distinct identities for different DeFi activities, fostering greater separation between various financial engagements. The STRK20 framework also incorporates a selective disclosure feature, intended to facilitate compliance and audit requirements.

This launch marks a significant step in Starknet’s ongoing efforts to develop privacy-enhancing features. It builds upon the STRK20 privacy layer, which was introduced in mid-2026 and initially offered shielded transfers, allowing users to move value without broadcasting transaction details. Shadow Accounts extend this privacy concept from the movement of funds to the actual utilization of funds within DeFi.

For developers, integration is supported by Starknet Wallet API version 0.10.4 and starknet.js version 10.8.0. A demonstration integration with Vesu Prime’s vSTRK vault has been deployed on the mainnet, with the first production integration scheduled for October 14, 2026.

While Shadow Accounts offer a notable advancement in user privacy by decoupling DeFi interactions, it is crucial to understand that activity within these shadow accounts remains visible on the blockchain. The primary benefit lies in obscuring the connection between these activity-specific addresses and the user’s main wallet, thereby reducing the vulnerabilities associated with address reuse.

Why This Matters

The materials describe a narrow update: Starknet and StarkWare introduced Shadow Accounts, a privacy feature integrated into the STRK20 framework. Shadow Accounts are a second step rather than a first, building upon the STRK20 privacy layer’s shielded transfers.

Broader Context

Source materials place the factual news in this context: Every time you use the same wallet across DeFi, you leave a trail. On a public blockchain, that trail is open to anyone with a block explorer and some spare time.
