Starknet Considers Layer 1 Migration to Control Security Timeline Amid Quantum and AI Threats
Starknet, a prominent layer 2 scaling solution, is contemplating a transition to a layer 1 blockchain. The move aims to grant the project greater control over its security migration timeline and proactively address emerging threats from quantum computing and artificial intelligence, according to Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder and CEO of StarkWare, the company behind Starknet.
Ben-Sasson articulated this strategic consideration on Thursday, highlighting two significant future challenges: the quantum threat, which he suggested could materialize sooner than anticipated, and the rapidly advancing capabilities of AI, which are becoming increasingly difficult to fully comprehend.
Currently, Starknet leverages Ethereum for its foundational security. This dependency means that Starknet’s own progress toward quantum resistance is intrinsically linked to the upgrade schedule of the Ethereum network.
Ben-Sasson indicated that Starknet could achieve quantum resistance as early as 2027. This timeline contrasts with Ethereum’s projected completion of full layer 1 quantum resistance by the end of 2029. He noted that Bitcoin has not yet established a comparable target for quantum resistance.
The StarkWare CEO emphasized that Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge (ZK-STARKs) and cryptographic agility are crucial for fortifying blockchains against future vulnerabilities. Starknet already incorporates ZK-STARKs technology, supports cryptographic upgrades, and has a defined roadmap for transitioning to post-quantum security. Furthermore, Ben-Sasson cautioned that the swift mathematical advancements spurred by AI present an additional imperative for blockchain networks to adapt with speed.
