Starknet Eyes L1 Shift for Quantum Resistance by 2027

Starknet Eyes Layer 1 Status for Quantum-Resistant Security by 2027

Starknet, a prominent blockchain network, is actively exploring a transition to a standalone Layer 1 (L1) blockchain. The move is driven by an ambitious target to achieve quantum-resistant security by 2027, amidst escalating concerns that artificial intelligence could accelerate the breakdown of current cryptographic standards.

Becoming an independent L1 would grant Starknet greater autonomy over its security upgrades, reducing its reliance on Ethereum for critical migration elements.

In an announcement on the social media platform X, Starknet revealed it is “actively considering becoming an L1,” framing the potential shift as a pathway to becoming “the first fully quantum-resistant network” with a 2027 deadline.

While Starknet currently utilizes zero-knowledge STARK proofs, which are based on hash-based cryptography, and maintains a clear roadmap for post-quantum security, its status as a Layer 2 (L2) solution on Ethereum means it inherits some security dependencies from its parent chain.

Two key areas remain outside the direct control of Starknet’s developers. The first is bridge messaging, which employs elliptic-curve cryptography for communication between Starknet and Ethereum. Should this dependency persist and an Ethereum upgrade occur before Starknet’s own security enhancements are fully integrated, the bridge could become inoperable.

The second concern is data availability. Starknet publishes its state data to Ethereum via blobs secured by KZG commitments. These commitments rely on cryptographic methods that are vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers. A compromise of KZG would impact data availability, though Starknet’s core STARK proofs would continue to validate the integrity of its state.

Ethereum itself is aiming for full Layer 1 quantum resistance by the end of 2029. Starknet’s proposed 2027 timeline would position it ahead of Ethereum, contingent on its ability to complete the necessary technical work and resolve architectural challenges associated with becoming an independent chain.

This proposal emerges against a backdrop of growing apprehension regarding advancements in AI-assisted mathematics. On October 7, Ethereum researcher Justin Drake advised the blockchain industry to prepare for a “bunker mode,” suggesting a controlled migration of assets to addresses with hidden public keys. However, Vitalik Buterin cautioned against precipitous action.

Starknet co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson echoed these concerns in posts on October 8, arguing that AI could hasten cryptographic threats more than anticipated. He identified the selection of cryptographic methods and the capacity for security system upgrades as fundamental pillars of post-quantum preparedness.

Starknet has already established infrastructure that could support independent operation, including STRK staking and multiple sequencers. Nevertheless, it still needs to address data availability, final settlement mechanisms, and modifications to its official bridge.

The bridge issue is particularly significant, especially given that Ethereum currently verifies Starknet withdrawal proofs before releasing bridged funds. If Starknet transitions to an L1, it could continue to post STARK proofs to Ethereum, maintaining a link between the networks, or it could completely sever this dependency. Each approach would introduce distinct security assumptions for users.
