Swiss Regulator Approves First Bitcoin ETF for Retail Investors
Switzerland’s financial regulator, FINMA, has greenlit the country’s first exchange-traded fund structured under Swiss law, offering retail investors direct exposure to Bitcoin. BIT Asset Management announced that its Bitcoin Fund ETF, ticker BBIT, is slated to commence trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November.
The fund holds Bitcoin directly and will be available for public offering exclusively within Switzerland. BIT Asset Management highlighted a key distinction between its offering and many existing European cryptocurrency products. “Most bitcoin products listed in Europe today are exchange-traded products (ETPs), which are debt instruments that carry issuer risk,” the firm stated.
In contrast, the Bitcoin Fund ETF is structured as a Swiss collective investment scheme. This structure ensures that the underlying assets are held separately from the fund management company, providing a “ring-fenced” protection for investors.
The fund is classified under Switzerland’s “other funds for alternative investments” category, acknowledging its specific risk profile. FINMA has indicated that other fund providers have also submitted applications for Bitcoin ETFs.
While FINMA has permitted funds investing primarily in a basket of cryptocurrencies since 2021, this marks the first approval for a fund solely dedicated to Bitcoin. The regulator cited Bitcoin’s established trading history and higher trading volume compared to other digital assets as factors in its decision.
However, FINMA cautioned that Bitcoin remains a highly volatile asset, even when accessed through an approved ETF.
