Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, reported a robust third quarter, posting $1.5 billion in net operating profit and nearly doubling its reserve buffer to $8 billion. The company’s latest attestation, released Friday and prepared by BDO, highlights continued profitability despite a turbulent year for the cryptocurrency market.
Profitability Amidst Market Volatility
Throughout the first nine months of 2026, Tether maintained a stable USDT issuance, hovering around $184 billion. The company’s earnings continue to be primarily driven by income generated from U.S. Treasuries and other short-duration financial instruments. In the past quarter alone, Tether’s net operating profit reached $1.5 billion, mirroring its second-quarter performance and bringing its total for the year’s first three quarters to $4.5 billion.
Significant Growth in Reserve Buffer
A notable development in the third quarter was the substantial increase in Tether’s reserve buffer. As of September 30, the buffer stood at nearly $8 billion, a significant jump from $4.1 billion at the end of the previous quarter, representing an increase of approximately $3.8 billion. The company’s total reserve assets amounted to $191.5 billion, against liabilities of roughly $183.5 billion.
The majority of these assets remain invested in highly liquid instruments, with $132.4 billion held in direct and indirect U.S. Treasury bills. Treasury bills and repurchase agreements continue to be the primary contributors to Tether’s operating income.
Strategic Reserve Management for Stability
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, emphasized the strategic importance of the growing reserve buffer. “Generating $1.5 billion in net operating profit while maintaining nearly $8.0 billion in excess reserves gives us a strong foundation for that work,” Ardoino stated. He added, “We are building Tether for the long term, with the liquidity to meet redemptions and the financial strength to support infrastructure people can rely on amidst the chaotic geopolitical environment we live in. The purpose behind our reserve strategy is to ensure we can continue to serve people when conditions become more difficult.”
Ardoino further explained that the expanded reserve buffer is designed to guarantee USDT’s reliability during periods of market and financial stress.
USDT’s Market Dominance and Liquidity Trends
The latest figures emerge as USDT continues to hold a dominant position in the stablecoin market. However, recent supply trends have indicated a cooling off. Earlier this month, USDT’s market capitalization saw a decrease of nearly $1 billion within a five-day span. Analysts from CryptoQuant have noted that Bitcoin’s recent rebound has occurred without the same expansion of stablecoin liquidity that fueled previous rallies.
While this trend does not necessarily signal issues for Tether or its stablecoin, it underscores the close correlation between stablecoin issuance and broader market liquidity.
Expanding Global Reach and Initiatives
In parallel with its financial performance, Tether has been actively pursuing strategic partnerships and investments. The company recently entered into an agreement with Kazakhstan’s central bank to explore the potential for a tenge-backed stablecoin and other tokenization initiatives. Additionally, Tether is investing in payment infrastructure across Latin America.
