Home Invasions Surge as Primary Crypto Wrench Attack Method

Home invasions have emerged as the most prevalent form of cryptocurrency wrench attacks globally in the first half of 2026, with incidents escalating to 20 from a single case reported a year prior. This trend was highlighted by the sentencing of two brothers for a brazen armed robbery and kidnapping in Minnesota.

Raymond Christian Garcia and Isiah Angelo Garcia, both from Waller, Texas, received sentences of 180 months and 186 months in prison, respectively. The sentences were handed down on Thursday by US District Judge Donovan W. Frank for their roles in the armed robbery of cryptocurrency and the kidnapping of a family in Grant, Minnesota. The brothers had previously pleaded guilty in June.

According to court documents, on September 19, 2025, the brothers, who had traveled from Texas to Minnesota, entered the victims’ home and held them at gunpoint. The family was zip-tied and held for over nine hours while the attackers demanded access to the victim’s cryptocurrency accounts.

When the demanded amount of cryptocurrency was not met, the brothers compelled the victim to drive to a cabin in upstate Minnesota. There, they obtained additional cryptocurrency from other devices, amassing a total exceeding $8 million. The Garcia brothers fled the scene after the victim’s son contacted 911. Authorities later identified and apprehended them near Houston.

“Raymond and Isiah Garcia violated the sanctity of a home, abducted a victim, terrorized a family at gunpoint for hours, and disrupted an entire community in a brazen act of violence and greed,” stated Christopher D. Dotson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Minneapolis Field Office.

The surge in home invasions as a primary tactic for crypto wrench attacks was previously reported by Cointelegraph in July. Citing data from blockchain security firm CertiK, the report indicated a significant rise in such incidents during the first half of 2026. CertiK verified a total of 52 wrench attacks worldwide in the first six months of 2026, marking a 33% increase from the 39 incidents recorded during the same period in 2025. Kidnappings associated with these attacks also saw an increase, rising to 16 from 12.

A separate report indicated that France has become the world’s most dangerous location for Bitcoin users, with 90 attacks recorded over a seven-month period.
