Uniswap Introduces Dynamic Fees and Surcharge for Volatile Pairs on Ethereum

Uniswap has launched a new fee mechanism for its ETH/USDC pool on Ethereum mainnet, introducing the VolatilePair Hook. This update replaces a single trading fee with two dynamic fees that are recalculated on every swap based on recent price movements. Additionally, the hook includes a temporary surcharge for trades that correct price deviations following significant market shifts, a measure designed to protect liquidity providers.

The VolatilePair Hook’s core innovation lies in its dynamic fee structure. Instead of a static fee, the pool now employs two separate fees: one for buys and one for sells. These fees are adjusted on each transaction based on recent price activity. Uniswap states that this approach aims to address issues where liquidity providers can incur losses due to static-fee arbitrage, particularly after large market movements.

The temporary surcharge is intended to mitigate these losses. Uniswap frames this surcharge as a way to protect liquidity providers from value capture by arbitrageurs who step in to correct price discrepancies. For traders, this change introduces a new variable, as the cost of a swap may now depend on the direction of the trade and recent market activity, rather than a fixed fee.

This development follows Uniswap’s introduction of the StablePair Hook in September 2026, which was designed for stablecoin pairs like USDC/USDT. The StablePair Hook reportedly achieved $3.1 billion in trading volume within its first four weeks. In contrast, trading on volatile pairs has exceeded $500 billion on Uniswap in 2026, highlighting the significance of the new VolatilePair Hook.

Uniswap indicates that the VolatilePair Hook is designed to support future enhancements without requiring complex migrations. Liquidity providers can move their positions into the new pool, with the expectation that subsequent upgrades can be implemented around them. The parameters and fee logic of the hook can be recalibrated through Uniswap governance.

However, several uncertainties remain regarding the new mechanism. It is unclear how much liquidity will migrate into the VolatilePair Hook pool and how its trading volume will compare to that of the StablePair Hook. Additionally, it is uncertain whether governance will adjust the surcharge once real trading data becomes available.

The implementation of the VolatilePair Hook represents Uniswap’s ongoing efforts to innovate fee structures, aiming to adapt to market volatility and enhance protection for liquidity providers on its platform.
