US Spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs See Inflows Amidst Crypto Market Rebound

US-listed spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced inflows on Wednesday, breaking previous streaks of outflows and coinciding with a broader rebound in cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin prices climbed above $80,000.

On Wednesday, Bitcoin ETFs attracted $74.6 million and Ether ETFs added $53 million, according to SoSoValue data. This marks a notable shift from the preceding days, which saw substantial outflows, including $399 million on Monday and $116 million on Tuesday. The total inflows for Bitcoin and Ether ETFs on Wednesday reached $128 million.

While the overall trend was positive, issuer performance varied. Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) led inflows with approximately $237 million. In contrast, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded outflows of $201.2 million on Wednesday, though this ended a four-session outflow streak for the fund.

The cryptocurrency market rebound occurred alongside a rally in US stocks following the results of the US midterm elections. Analysts suggest that the easing of election-related uncertainty may have contributed to the positive market sentiment. James Butterfill, head of research at digital asset manager CoinShares, indicated that Bitcoin’s performance might be attributed to relief as election uncertainty subsided, having already priced in potential outcomes.

CK Zheng, co-founder of crypto hedge fund ZX Squared Capital and former global head of risk at Credit Suisse, pointed to monetary liquidity, institutional investment flows, and broader investor appetite for risk as more immediate drivers of Bitcoin’s price. Zheng stated that Bitcoin had largely priced in the possibility of a Democratic sweep before the election, leaving room for a relief rally as uncertainty eased.

While the inflows suggest a potential shift in institutional investor sentiment, the market remains subject to various influences. Spot Bitcoin ETFs and corporate treasury holdings could broaden demand but also expose Bitcoin to institutional selling pressure. The extent to which the election outcome directly influenced the market rebound, versus other factors like monetary liquidity and institutional flows, remains a subject of interpretation. The long-term impact of these flows and holdings on Bitcoin’s price and demand is yet to be fully determined.
