Zcash Network Upgrade NU7 Successfully Deploys on Testnet, Mainnet Launch Slated for November 5
The Zcash network’s NU7 upgrade has been successfully activated on its testnet, a crucial step towards enhancing transaction speeds and network sustainability. The upgrade, which shortens the target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, is now slated for mainnet launch on November 5.
Accelerated Transactions and Enhanced Throughput
The most significant immediate impact of the NU7 upgrade is the tripling of transaction confirmation speeds. By reducing the target block interval to 25 seconds, Zcash aims to significantly decrease the waiting time for users and boost on-chain throughput, thereby strengthening its competitive edge in privacy-focused payment scenarios.
Sprout Pool Funds at Risk
As part of the NU7 upgrade, the development team has deprecated version 4 transactions. This change will affect Zcash (ZEC) held in older Sprout privacy pools. Users who do not transfer their funds from these pools before the mainnet upgrade will find their ZEC inaccessible. Zcash holders are strongly advised to check their wallets and ensure any funds are moved out of the Sprout pool.
Introducing Network Sustainability Mechanism
NU7 also introduces a “network sustainability mechanism.” This feature reallocates a portion of transaction fees to future block rewards. The aim is to provide ongoing economic incentives for miners and validators to secure the network, even as block subsidies decrease over time. This marks a pivotal transition for Zcash, moving from an inflation-based subsidy model towards a perpetual fee-based system.
In contrast, Bitcoin’s monetary policy relies on fixed halving cycles, approximately every four years, to regulate new supply, without a formal mechanism for fee redistribution to block rewards. Zcash’s sustainability design represents a less common, innovative economic model within the cryptocurrency landscape.
Mainnet Launch Decision Pending
The Zcash development team will assess the testnet performance on October 20 to determine whether to proceed with the mainnet upgrade and finalize the exact activation height. The target launch date for the mainnet remains November 5. However, the team has indicated that the mainnet timeline could be adjusted if significant bugs are discovered during the testnet phase.
Market Reacts Positively to Upgrade News
Recent market activity has shown a positive response to the NU7 upgrade. ZEC prices saw a notable surge of over 20% in early October, reflecting market optimism regarding the performance enhancements expected from NU7.
