ZKsync Token Surges as Vitalik Buterin Hails New Ethereum Prover
The ZK token, native to the ZKsync scaling solution, saw a 6.2% increase in value following Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s public endorsement of Airbender Prime, the project’s latest Ethereum prover.
ZKsync introduced Airbender Prime on October 13, 2026, touting its ability to perform real-time Ethereum proving without requiring extensive specialized hardware. A prover is a crucial component in blockchain technology, responsible for generating cryptographic receipts that validate the correct processing of transaction batches. These receipts can then be quickly verified by anyone without the need to re-execute the original computations.
In a recent test, Airbender Prime successfully proved 99% of 7,200 consecutive Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds each, with every block in that sequence being proven in less than 12 seconds. This impressive performance was achieved using a single NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU. ZKsync also currently leads the ETHproofs.org public leaderboard in metrics such as average proving time, GPU efficiency, and cost.
Technical Underpinnings and Post-Quantum Security
Under the hood, Airbender Prime is built upon hash-based STARKs, a proof system selected for its inherent post-quantum security capabilities. ZKsync has also announced plans to integrate Keccak-256 for Layer 1 proofs. The system’s architecture further supports multi-GPU configurations, indicating that a single GPU represents a baseline rather than a limitation.
Buterin’s Shift in Focus
Buterin commented on the development on October 15, 2026, two days after Airbender Prime’s launch. He congratulated ZKsync, declaring that the “speed race for zkEVMs is definitively won.”
However, Buterin then pivoted, suggesting that the focus should now shift from the speed of zkEVMs to their security. He advocated for the implementation of formal verification to ensure that provers accurately align with Ethereum’s specifications. Additionally, he called for the establishment of strict limits on prover costs in relation to gas prices.
The ZK token’s 6.2% price jump occurred concurrently with the announcement of Airbender Prime and Buterin’s subsequent remarks.
Broader Implications for Ethereum and Beyond
ZKsync positions its advancements in efficient, verifiable computation as contributing to a larger Ethereum objective: reducing the hardware requirements for verification. The project has also highlighted potential applications in finance and other industries where more accessible independent verification could prove significant.
Several key developments warrant close observation. These include the planned Keccak-256 implementation for Layer 1 proofs, the practical performance of multi-GPU setups, and the resilience of the post-quantum design under external scrutiny.
Perhaps the most significant indicator will be ZKsync’s response to Buterin’s call for formal verification. Achieving mathematical proof that aligns with Ethereum’s specifications is a more complex and time-consuming endeavor than optimizing benchmark performance.
